Causes

  • Open or broken wiring in the exhaust valve control circuit for cylinder 8
  • Corroded, bent, or loose connector at the actuator or PCM
  • Failed exhaust valve solenoid/actuator (open coil)
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay supplying the actuator circuit
  • Poor ground or high-resistance ground connection
  • PCM/ECM internal fault or poor connector at PCM

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Reduced engine performance or hesitation under load
  • Rough idle or poor drivability if valve timing control is affected
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Possible storage of other camshaft or timing-related codes
  • Noise from the valve/actuator area if mechanically binding

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame data and related/pendant codes; note engine conditions when code set
  • Visually inspect wiring and connectors at cylinder 8 actuator and PCM for damage, corrosion, or disconnection
  • Check relevant fuses and relays for the valve control circuit
  • Backprobe the actuator connector with key ON/engine OFF to verify power and ground presence
  • Measure coil resistance of the actuator with the connector disconnected and compare to specification
  • Perform a continuity check between the actuator connector and the PCM pin for open circuit

Signal parameters

  • Expected coil resistance: typically around 5–70 ohms (varies by design). Compare to OEM spec before replacement.
  • Control signal: commonly a switched ground or PWM from the PCM. PWM frequency often in the 20–300 Hz range depending on manufacturer.
  • Supply voltage at actuator: with ignition ON, battery voltage should be present on the power feed (if circuit is powered).
  • Command feedback: scan tool should show commanded state (on/off or duty %) when PCM commands actuator.

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read all stored codes and freeze-frame data. Note if code is pending or confirmed and any other camshaft/timing codes.
  2. Visually inspect actuator, harness, and connectors at cylinder 8 for obvious damage, corrosion, or water intrusion. Repair as needed.
  3. Check related fuses/relays for continuity and correct operation. Replace if faulty.
  4. With ignition OFF, disconnect the actuator connector and measure coil resistance across the actuator terminals. If open/infinite or well outside spec, replace the actuator.
  5. With ignition ON (engine OFF), backprobe the connector and check for battery voltage on the power feed and a good ground or PCM drive signal on the control pin. Use manufacturer wiring diagram to identify pins.
  6. If power/ground good at connector but actuator open or unresponsive, replace the actuator. If actuator good but no power/ground, trace wiring: perform continuity checks from connector to PCM and to chassis ground.
  7. If intermittent: wiggle harness and connectors while monitoring live data/voltage to locate intermittent open.
  8. If wiring and actuator test good, command the actuator with a scan tool while monitoring the control signal and comparing to expected behavior. If the PCM does not command or commands incorrectly, suspect PCM or related control circuitry and verify PCM connector and power/ground circuits.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform a test drive or run conditions to confirm the code does not return. Re-scan for related codes and verify system operation.

Likely causes

  • Damaged harness or pinned connector at the cylinder 8 actuator (most common)
  • Failed actuator (open coil) at cylinder 8
  • Corroded connector or poor mating causing open circuit
  • Blown fuse or intermittent power supply to the actuator
  • PCM output driver failure (less common)
