Causes
- Open or short in the cylinder 10 deactivation/valve control wiring
- Corroded or loose connector at the solenoid or PCM
- Failed intake valve deactivation solenoid / oil control valve
- Restricted oil passage or low engine oil pressure
- Stuck or mechanically failed lifter / actuator / rocker
- Faulty PCM or driver circuit
Symptoms
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
- Possible rough idle, vibration or intermittent misfire under some conditions
- Reduced fuel economy when cylinder deactivation is not working correctly
- Engine noise (tapping) from the affected bank if lifter/actuator mechanically stuck
- Degraded performance or limp-home mode in some vehicles
What to check
- Read and record stored codes and freeze-frame data with a scan tool
- Verify oil level, oil condition, and correct viscosity
- Visually inspect wiring and connector for cylinder 10 solenoid for damage, corrosion, or loose pins
- Backprobe the solenoid connector and observe voltage/ground while commanding activation with a scan tool
- Measure solenoid coil resistance (while disconnected) and compare to specification
- Check for continuity to PCM and for shorts to ground/battery in harness
Signal parameters
- Control type: switched 12 V supply or switched ground driver depending on manufacturer; verify with wiring diagram
- Expected coil resistance: typically low ohms (manufacturer-specific; commonly 2–30 ohms). Compare to spec.
- Control signal: pulse width or duty-cycle varies with engine load/speed when commanded; frequency can range from a few Hz to tens of Hz depending on strategy
- Standby voltage at solenoid connector: ~battery voltage when supply side is present
- When commanded OFF: open or no ground/pulse; when commanded ON: ground or switched supply present (monitor while commanding on/off)
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect a scan tool, read PIDs, DTCs, and freeze-frame. Note conditions when the code set (engine speed, temp, oil temp/pressure).
- Check engine oil level and condition. If oil is very low, dirty, or incorrect viscosity, correct level and retest after cleaning or oil service.
- Perform a visual inspection of the cylinder 10 solenoid/OCV connector and harness. Repair any damaged wiring or corrosion.
- With ignition OFF, disconnect the solenoid and measure coil resistance between the solenoid pins. Compare to OEM spec. Replace if out of range or open.
- With ignition ON (engine off) and using a backprobe, command the solenoid ON/OFF with the scan tool and observe voltage/ground at the connector. Verify driver changes state.
- Check for short to battery or short to ground between the solenoid feed/return and vehicle ground/battery using an ohmmeter or power probe.
- If electrical tests pass, swap the cylinder 10 solenoid with an identical known-good solenoid on another cylinder (if practical) to see if the fault follows the solenoid.
- If the fault does not follow the solenoid, inspect/trace wiring to the PCM and check PCM driver output. Repair harness damage or replace PCM only after ruling out all harness/actuator faults.
- If electrical system and solenoid are good but the code persists, inspect valve train: remove valve cover(s) as required to check for stuck/failed lifter, actuator, rocker arm or blocked oil passages. Clean or replace failed mechanical components.
- After repairs, clear codes and perform a road/drive cycle to confirm the fault does not return. Re-scan for pending codes and verify normal operation.
Likely causes
- Faulty cylinder 10 oil control valve (stuck or electrically failed)
- Wiring open, short to ground, or short to battery on the solenoid feed or return
- Poor connector pin contact or corrosion at the solenoid connector
- Restricted oil feed or blocked oil passage to the deactivation actuator
- Collapsed or mechanically seized lifter/actuator preventing valve deactivation
- PCM driver fault (less common)
