Cylinder 10 Deactivation/Intake Valve Performance

Causes

  • Faulty oil control valve (OCV) / solenoid for cylinder 10
  • Clogged or restricted oil feed to valve deactivation/VVT components
  • Wiring fault or poor connector (open, short, high resistance) to OCV or camshaft actuator
  • Failed camshaft phaser or VVT actuator
  • Hydraulic valve lifter or rocker arm failure for cylinder 10
  • Mechanical valve train damage (worn cam lobe, broken components, bent valve)

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Rough idle and/or vibration
  • Misfire or reduced contribution from cylinder 10
  • Reduced engine power and drivability problems
  • Decreased fuel economy
  • Tapping or abnormal valve/valvetrain noise

What to check

  • Retrieve DTCs and freeze-frame data; note related and pending codes
  • Inspect engine oil level and condition; check for sludge or contamination
  • Visually inspect wiring and connectors for OCV, cam phaser and camshaft position sensor (pin damage, corrosion, loose connector)
  • Use a scan tool to monitor commanded vs actual intake valve deactivation/VVT status and camshaft position data
  • Perform a commanded OCV/VVT activation test with scan tool (if supported) and observe actuator response
  • Measure OCV coil resistance and supply voltage/ground at connector

Signal parameters

  • OCV command (ON/OFF or duty cycle %) for cylinder 10
  • OCV coil resistance (ohms) and measured voltage (V) during command
  • Camshaft position sensor signal (frequency/angle) and cam/crank correlation
  • Cam phaser commanded position vs actual (degrees advance/retard)
  • Cylinder 10 misfire counter or contribution value
  • Engine oil pressure (kPa or psi) and oil temperature

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety: Park vehicle, set parking brake, disconnect battery if performing internal inspections per manufacturer procedure.
  2. Read and record stored, pending and freeze-frame DTCs; note operating conditions when code set.
  3. Check engine oil level and condition; correct low level or change oil if contaminated or sludged.
  4. Visually inspect connectors and wiring for OCV, camshaft sensor and cam phaser. Repair any damaged wiring or poor connections.
  5. With a scan tool, command the OCV/VVT for cylinder 10 and observe live data (duty cycle, cam position). Verify PCM is commanding and actuator responds.
  6. Measure OCV coil resistance and supply voltage/ground at rest and during command. Replace OCV if out of specification or no response.
  7. If the OCV is operating electrically but valve timing/cam phaser does not move, inspect oil passages and consider removing phaser or timing cover for further inspection of phaser and oil feed.
  8. Perform cylinder contribution/misfire tests and a compression or leak-down test on cylinder 10 to rule out mechanical valve or piston damage.
  9. If mechanical valvetrain damage is found (worn/broken lifter, cam, valve), repair/replace affected components and any contaminated oil/filters.
  10. After repairs, clear DTCs and perform a road test/confirm with scan tool that commanded and actual valve states match and code does not return.
  11. If all hardware checks good and code persists, consider PCM reflash or replacement as a last step following manufacturer guidance.

Likely causes

  • OCV/solenoid for cylinder 10 stuck or electrically faulty
  • Clogged oil passage or dirty oil preventing phaser/OCV movement
  • Open/short/poor connector to OCV or camshaft position sensor
  • Cam phaser stuck or damaged preventing commanded valve timing
  • Failed hydraulic lifter or other mechanical valve-train fault on cylinder 10

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Cylinder 10 Deactivation/Intake Valve Performance — PCM detected intake valve deactivation or intake valve performance outside expected limits on cylinder 10. Action required: inspect OCV/VVT systems, wiring, oil condition and valvetrain.
