Causes

  • Open, short to ground, or short to battery in the sensor wiring or harness
  • Poor connector connection (corrosion, bent pins, water intrusion)
  • Failed camshaft position actuator temperature sensor
  • Faulty camshaft position actuator (internal wiring / sensor) or damaged actuator harness
  • Faulty ECM or internal circuit fault
  • Contamination (oil/coolant) causing sensor to read incorrectly

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Reduced engine performance or limp-in mode (possible loss of cam phasing)
  • Rough idle, hesitation, or reduced fuel economy
  • Possible hard starting or increased emissions
  • No starting or other drivability issues if actuator is disabled by ECM

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and live data with a scan tool: check sensor temperature value, diagnostic status, and camshaft actuator position
  • Verify DTC is current vs. history; check for multiple related codes (cam/crank correlation)
  • Visually inspect wiring harness and connectors at the camshaft actuator and ECM for damage, corrosion, or oil contamination
  • Backprobe sensor connector and measure signal voltage and/or resistance while key on and during engine operation
  • Perform wiggle test on harness while observing live data for intermittent changes
  • Check related fuses and engine grounds

Signal parameters

  • Typical sensor type: thermistor (NTC) or temperature sending element integrated in actuator
  • Expected signal voltage range (generic): approx. 0.5–4.5 V at the ECM under normal temperatures
  • Expected resistance range (generic): from a few hundred ohms to tens of kilo-ohms across extreme temperatures (-40 to +150 °C)
  • Fault conditions: open circuit -> very high resistance / no voltage change; short to ground -> ~0 V; short to battery -> near battery voltage

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a scan tool and record freeze frame and live sensor data. Note whether the sensor reads out-of-range, fixed, or fluctuating.
  2. Inspect the camshaft actuator area and harness on bank 2 for oil, debris, or mechanical damage. Repair any obvious issues.
  3. With ignition ON (engine off), backprobe the sensor connector and measure reference, signal, and ground circuits. Compare to vehicle-specific values.
  4. Start engine and observe sensor voltage/resistance changes with temperature and engine operation. Perform a wiggle test on wiring to check for intermittent faults.
  5. If the signal is out-of-range at the sensor connector, remove actuator and bench-test sensor if possible (measure resistance vs temperature). Replace sensor/actuator as needed.
  6. If the sensor output at the connector is correct but ECM sees an abnormal value, inspect/repair wiring between sensor and ECM and check ECM connector pins/grounds.
  7. If wiring and sensor test good, consider ECM fault. Before ECM replacement, confirm with scope or substitute ECM if available and follow manufacturer procedures.
  8. After repairs, clear codes, perform component/actuation tests, and road test to verify the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Damaged or chafed wiring between sensor and ECM on bank 2
  • Corroded or loose connector at the actuator or ECM
  • Failed temperature sensor inside the camshaft actuator
  • Oil contamination or mechanical failure of the actuator affecting the sensor
