Causes

What to check

Signal parameters

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record stored codes and freeze-frame; note which modules report on Bus C.
  2. Ensure vehicle battery is fully charged and main grounds are clean and tight.
  3. Perform a thorough visual inspection of Bus C wiring, connectors, and modules for damage, water ingress, or corrosion.
  4. With ignition ON (engine OFF), measure CANL voltage at a known good module connector and compare to chassis ground. If CANL is abnormally low (< ~1.0 V) proceed to isolate.
  5. Measure resistance between CANH and CANL with battery disconnected. Confirm ~60 Ω. If open or shorted, trace wiring and check terminator connectors.
  6. Use an oscilloscope across CANH–CANL while commanding communication (or cranking key) to observe waveform. Look for flatline, clipped, or noisy signals and identify which node is pulling low.
  7. Isolate sections by disconnecting modules one at a time (or disconnect splice packs) while monitoring CANL voltage to find when the line returns to normal — the module removed before the fault clears is suspect.
  8. If a module is suspected, inspect its connector and wiring for shorts to ground. If wiring checks fail, consider swapping or bench-testing the module per manufacturer procedure.
  9. Repair or replace damaged wiring, connectors, terminators, or faulty module as indicated. Reassemble and clear codes, then road test and re-scan to verify the fault does not return.
