Causes

  • Open or short in Bus D (+) wiring
  • Short to ground on Bus D (+)
  • Damaged or corroded connector at a module on Bus D
  • Failed CAN/LIN transceiver in one or more control modules
  • Missing or incorrect termination resistor(s)
  • Blown fuse or power supply problem to network gateway/module

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or multiple network-related warning lamps
  • Loss of communication with one or more modules on Bus D (inoperative displays, modules, or features)
  • Intermittent electrical/electronic module behavior
  • No-start or crank issues if drivetrain/gateway modules affected
  • Stored network communication-related fault codes in multiple modules

What to check

  • Retrieve all stored U-codes and related freeze-frame data from all modules
  • Visual inspection of Bus D wiring, connectors, and junctions for damage, corrosion, or water intrusion
  • Confirm battery voltage and ground integrity before network testing
  • Check fuses and power feeds for gateway and modules on Bus D
  • Measure voltage at Bus D (+) and Bus D (−) with key ON, engine OFF
  • Measure resistance across Bus D (+) to Bus D (−) (expected ~60 ohms for 2×120Ω terminations)

Signal parameters

  • Expected idle voltage (typical CAN bus): CANH ≈ 2.5 V, CANL ≈ 2.5 V (both lines should be near mid-supply when recessive)
  • Dominant state typical: CANH ≈ 3.5 V, CANL ≈ 1.5 V (differential ≈ 2.0 V)
  • Measured voltage on Bus D (+) low condition: significantly below ~2.0–2.5 V (depends on vehicle thresholds)
  • Bus resistance with two terminators present: ~60 Ω between Bus D (+) and Bus D (−); single terminator: ~120 Ω
  • Short to ground will pull Bus D (+) toward 0 V; short to battery will pull it toward battery voltage

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm DTC and collect freeze-frame, confirming key state and conditions when code set.
  2. Inspect visible wiring, connectors, and PCB/ground points for corrosion, damage, or water intrusion on modules connected to Bus D.
  3. Check vehicle battery voltage and ground straps; correct any low-voltage or poor-ground conditions.
  4. Verify fuses and power feeds for gateway and modules on Bus D; repair as needed.
  5. With key ON, measure voltage at Bus D (+) at a convenient connector and compare to Bus D (−) and ground. Note values.
  6. Measure resistance between Bus D (+) and Bus D (−) with battery disconnected to verify termination resistances (~60 Ω expected with two terminators).
  7. Isolate wiring: disconnect modules on Bus D one at a time (begin with those closest to the fault location or recently serviced) to see if the low condition clears; if it clears when a module is unplugged, suspect that module.
  8. Use an oscilloscope or CAN/LIN bus analyzer to view waveform integrity and locate where the signal is being pulled low (look for missing recessive level, short pulses, or constant low).
  9. Trace and repair any short-to-ground or short-to-B+ faults found. Repair corroded connectors, replace damaged harness sections, or restore proper termination.
  10. If wiring and connectors check good, suspect and replace the module whose transceiver is failing (follow manufacturer procedures for module programming if required).
  11. Clear DTCs, perform functional tests and road test to confirm repair and that the U0058 does not return.

Likely causes

  • Short to ground or low-voltage short on Bus D (+) wiring
  • Failed module transceiver pulling Bus D (+) low
  • Disconnected or corroded connector at a module on Bus D
  • Missing/failed termination resistor(s) or incorrect wiring after a repair

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Bus D positive line voltage below expected threshold detected by gateway/module. Communication on Bus D is degraded or lost; check wiring, connectors, termination, and module transceivers.
