Lost Communication With Four-Wheel Drive Clutch Control Module

Causes

  • 4WD clutch control module failure
  • Open, shorted or intermittent wiring on module power, ground, or CAN bus
  • Blown fuse or relay supplying module power
  • Poor or corroded connector(s) at the module or junctions
  • CAN bus termination fault or short to battery/ground
  • Battery or low system voltage / weak charging system

Symptoms

  • 4WD system inoperative or stuck in 2WD/limited mode
  • 4WD, check 4WD, traction or MIL warning lamps illuminated
  • No 4WD clutch module data or PID values available on a scan tool
  • Inability to change drive modes from driver controls
  • Intermittent 4WD operation or loss of remote/configurable 4WD functions
  • Other network modules reporting communication errors

What to check

  • Retrieve all stored and pending codes from all control modules with a capable scan tool
  • Confirm whether the 4WD clutch control module is present/listed in the scan tool module list
  • Clear codes and attempt to re-create the fault to verify persistence
  • Check vehicle battery voltage and charging system (low voltage can cause communication faults)
  • Inspect & verify fuses/relays supplying power to the 4WD clutch control module
  • Visually inspect module connectors and wiring for corrosion, damage, pin push-out, or water contamination

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus type: two-wire differential (CAN_H and CAN_L)
  • Expected idle (recessive) voltage: ~2.5 V on each CAN line (vehicle-specific)
  • Dominant state: typically results in a differential voltage (use scope for exact values)
  • Typical CAN data rates in 4WD networks: commonly 125 kbps to 500 kbps (vehicle-specific)
  • Expected CAN traffic: periodic messages from 4WD clutch module when awake (frequency varies by vehicle; often multiple Hz to tens of Hz)
  • Termination: combined resistance ~60 ohms across CAN_H and CAN_L (two 120-ohm terminators in parallel)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a professional scan tool and record all current and pending codes from all modules; note which modules appear on the network
  2. Verify module presence: confirm the scan tool can enumerate or communicate with the 4WD clutch control module; attempt to request live data/PIDs
  3. Check vehicle battery voltage (key on engine off and during cranking) and ensure it is within normal limits; recharge or replace if low
  4. Inspect fuses and relays that supply the 4WD clutch module; replace any blown fuses and test again
  5. Perform a visual inspection of the 4WD module connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, or water ingress; repair or clean as needed
  6. Measure key power and ground at the module connector with the harness connected; key ON should show battery voltage on power circuits and low resistance to ground on ground circuits
  7. With ignition ON, observe CAN_H and CAN_L at the module connector with a lab scope or high-speed multimeter: verify expected idle voltages and active data pulses; compare to a known good node if available
  8. If no CAN activity at the module but present at other nodes, trace wiring between the module and the nearest gateway/ECU for opens, shorts to power/ground, or damaged shielding; repair wiring as needed
  9. Measure termination resistance across CAN_H and CAN_L at the connector (ignition off) to confirm ~60 ohms; if open or very low, inspect for missing terminator or short
  10. Perform a wiggle test of harness and connectors while watching for changes in communication with the scan tool to identify intermittent faults
  11. If wiring, power and bus integrity are confirmed but module does not respond, check service information for required software updates or reprogramming; replace module only after confirming replacement and programming procedures
  12. After repairs, clear DTCs, cycle ignition, and verify that the module appears on the network and the U0114 code does not return; road test as required

Likely causes

  • Loss of module power or ground (fuse, wiring, connector)
  • Damaged or shorted CAN high/low wiring between module and network
  • Corroded connector pins or water intrusion at module harness
  • Failed 4WD clutch control module
  • Network termination or grounding fault causing bus silence
  • Aftermarket device or recent service disturbed network wiring or module programming

Fault status

⚠️ Status
No communication received from the Four-Wheel Drive Clutch Control Module on the vehicle data bus. Module does not respond to network requests or fails to transmit expected messages.
