Causes

  • Open or short in CAN bus wiring (CAN_H/CAN_L) to steering angle sensor module
  • Faulty steering angle sensor module or steering column control unit
  • Poor or corroded connector pins, damaged connector or physical harness damage
  • Power supply or ground fault at the steering angle sensor module
  • CAN bus termination or network topology fault (missing/shorted termination resistor)
  • Intermittent module wake-up or software/configuration error

Symptoms

  • Steering angle data unavailable in scan tool
  • DTC U0126 stored in multiple control modules
  • Stability control, traction control, or ABS warnings illuminated
  • Steering-dependent features (lane-keep, adaptive steering, DSC) disabled or limited
  • Possible intermittent communication faults or loss of related functions during driving

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame and full DTC list from all network modules (ABS, SRS, PCM, BCM)
  • Check battery voltage and vehicle power integrity (12V) with engine off and running
  • Visually inspect the steering column harness, connectors and nearby junctions for damage, corrosion or pin push-out
  • Check relevant fuses and relays for the steering/steering column modules
  • Measure CAN bus voltages at the steering angle sensor connector: CAN_H ~2.5V idle, CAN_L ~2.5V idle (differential ~0V idle) and look for dominant recessive states with oscilloscope
  • Measure CAN bus termination resistance (approx. 60 ohms across CAN_H and CAN_L with ignition on)

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus idle voltage: CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V (measured to chassis ground)
  • Differential idle voltage: ~0 V (dominant bits show differential swings)
  • Approximate bus termination resistance: ~60 Ω across CAN_H and CAN_L (two 120 Ω terminators in parallel)
  • Expected message frequency: steering angle messages typically at 10–100 Hz (tool-dependent)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all DTCs and freeze-frame data from all modules; note any other network U-codes. 2) Attempt to clear codes and see if U0126 returns. 3) Visually inspect connector and harness at steering angle sensor/steering column; repair any obvious damage. 4) Verify module power and ground pins have correct voltages and good ground continuity. 5) Check fuses/relays that feed the steering column module. 6) Backprobe CAN_H and CAN_L at the steering angle sensor connector; with ignition on, measure voltages and observe waveform with scope if possible. 7) Measure resistance across CAN_H and CAN_L (~60 Ω). 8) If bus shows abnormal voltage/waveform, isolate sections by disconnecting suspected modules or splicing points to find fault; repair short/open. 9) If bus is healthy but module does not transmit, try swapping or bench-testing the steering angle sensor module if available or replace with known-good unit. 10) After repair or replacement, reprogram/calibrate the steering angle sensor per manufacturer procedures (SAS auto-learn or alignment). 11) Clear codes and perform test drive to confirm no reoccurrence and proper system operation.

Likely causes

  • Damaged connector or wiring at steering column (pin corrosion, broken wire)
  • Loss of module ground or 12V feed to the steering angle sensor module
  • CAN bus short to power or ground near the steering angle sensor
  • Failed steering angle sensor/module (internal electronics)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Lost communication with steering angle sensor module — the module is not responding on the vehicle CAN network (no valid steering angle messages). May cause stability/steering-related features to be disabled.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-3.0 hours
