Causes

Diagnostic algorithm

  2. Check vehicle battery voltage and state; charge if low. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce; re-scan to confirm persistence.
  3. Inspect TPMS module location and connectors for corrosion, water ingress, damaged wires, or pushed-out terminals. Repair or reseal as required.
  4. Verify fuses and power/ground to the TPMS module. Measure +12V supply at the module with key ON and check ground for low resistance to chassis.
  5. Measure CAN H and CAN L voltages at the TPMS module connector with key ON. Compare to typical idle/dominant values. If voltages are out of range, trace wiring for short to supply/ground or open.
  6. Check for proper CAN termination (approx. 60 ohm between CAN H and CAN L). Remove suspected shorted modules one at a time if needed to isolate fault.
  7. Use a CAN bus analyzer or scope with CAN decode to look for TPMS-specific frames or collisions. If no TPMS frames exist but bus healthy otherwise, suspect TPMS module failure.
  8. Use a TPMS activation tool to trigger wheel sensors and confirm the TPMS module receives sensor data (if module responds, problem may be intermittent wiring or software).
  9. If wiring, power and bus are verified good and module is not responding, replace TPMS module per manufacturer procedure and perform any required programming/relearn of sensors and module parameters.
  10. After repair, clear codes, verify communication via scan tool, perform TPMS relearn/initialization and road test to confirm proper operation.
