Completed

Causes
- Open or short in CAN/LIN communication wiring between the generator and vehicle network
- Loss of power or ground to the Generator B Control Module
- Corroded, loose or damaged connector pins at the generator or harness
- Blown fuse or failed relay supplying the generator control module
- Failed Generator B Control Module (internal electronics)
- Faulty gateway/PCM/BCM or network termination fault
Symptoms
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or battery/charging warning illuminated
- Reduced or no charging from Generator B; battery may discharge
- Charging system faults or limp-home mode depending on vehicle
- Electric accessories or battery management features degraded
- Stored U012F and possibly related network communication codes
What to check
- Retrieve all stored/ pending codes and freeze-frame data with a capable scan tool
- Check for additional network codes (e.g., U0100, U0120, U0140) that indicate broader bus issues
- Measure battery voltage (key ON, engine OFF) and during cranking/idle
- Visually inspect generator connector, pins and wiring for corrosion, damage or water entry
- Verify fuses and relays that supply the generator control module are intact and seated
- Check CAN/LIN bus termination resistance (approx. 60 ohms across CAN H–L on a two-terminator CAN bus)
Signal parameters
- Vehicle battery voltage to module (Key ON) ≈ 11–14 V (dependent on state of charge)
- CAN bus idle voltages: CAN H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN L ≈ 2.5 V (both ~2.5 V at recessive)
- CAN bus dominant state: CAN H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN L ≈ 1.5 V during active frames
- Termination resistance across CAN H–L ≈ 58–62 ohms (two 120 Ω in parallel ≈ 60 Ω)
- LIN (if present) typically idle ≈ battery voltage via pull-up; activity pulses when master requests
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect a scan tool that supports network module communication. Note U012F freeze frame and any related codes.
- Verify battery voltage is within specification. Low battery can cause module non-response—recharge if necessary.
- Inspect the generator control module connector and harness for damaged wires, corrosion, bent pins, or water intrusion. Repair any physical damage.
- Check and verify all fuses and relays feeding the generator control module and associated power/ground circuits.
- With key ON, backprobe at the generator connector and measure CAN H and CAN L voltages. Compare to a known-good CAN node. Look for missing or stuck-line voltages.
- Measure bus termination resistance across CAN H–L with power off; expect ≈60 Ω. If open or shorted, trace wiring for breaks or shorts to battery/ground.
- Perform a wiggle test on harness and connectors while monitoring communication. Note intermittent reconnection or code changes.
- If wiring and bus integrity are confirmed, attempt communication with the generator module from the scan tool. If still no response, substitute a known-good generator control module where possible, or bench-test the generator/module per manufacturer procedure.
- Repair or replace defective wiring, connectors, or module. After repairs, clear codes and perform a drive/operational cycle to confirm the fault does not return.
- If fault persists and multiple modules show network loss, inspect gateway/BCM/PCM and network termination as part of a broader network diagnosis.
Likely causes
- Damaged or disconnected CAN H/CAN L wire at generator connector
- Module power/ground circuit open (fuse, relay, wiring damage)
- Corroded connector terminals causing intermittent comms
- Failed generator control module
- Fault in vehicle network (missing termination resistors, short to battery/ground)
Fault status
Status
No communication detected from Generator B Control Module on vehicle network. Module not responding to controller requests.
