Causes

  • BCM D internal failure (hardware or firmware)
  • Battery/system voltage low or intermittent
  • Blown fuse or failed power/ignition supply to BCM
  • Poor or corroded ground connection for BCM
  • Damaged, corroded or disconnected BCM connector
  • Open, shorted or high-resistance wiring on CAN/data bus

Symptoms

  • Instrument cluster or message center displays communication warnings
  • Non-functioning central locking, interior lights, windows, wipers or other body functions
  • Push-button start/remote key features may not work
  • Multiple communication-related DTCs stored in other modules
  • Unable to communicate with BCM using diagnostic tool
  • Intermittent or permanent loss of certain comfort/convenience features

What to check

  • Read and record all stored codes and freeze frame data from all modules
  • Attempt to communicate with the BCM using an OEM scan tool
  • Check battery voltage (key on and cranking) and condition
  • Inspect BCM fuses and relay(s) related to BCM power/ignition
  • Visually inspect BCM connector(s) for corrosion, bent pins, water ingress or damage
  • Check main grounds and measure voltage drop between BCM ground and chassis

Signal parameters

  • CAN High idle ≈ 2.5 V, CAN Low idle ≈ 2.5 V (differential ≈ 0 V when recessive)
  • Dominant state: CANH ~3.5 V, CANL ~1.5 V (differential ≈ 2.0 V) during activity
  • Bus voltage (battery) and BCM supply voltage (should be stable ~12 V or charging voltage)
  • Message frequency for BCM PID/ID (varies by vehicle; expected periodic messages when awake)
  • Bus error counters / bus-off status reported by other modules
  • Presence/absence of BCM node address on network

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm the U0144 code and note any related U-codes. Record freeze frame and module states.
  2. Use an OEM-quality diagnostic tool to attempt communication with the BCM. Note if tool sees the module or times out.
  3. Check battery voltage and condition. Recharge or replace battery if low; verify charging system.
  4. Inspect and verify BCM power feeds and fuses (remove and inspect fuse/relay terminals). Replace faulty fuses/relays as required.
  5. Inspect BCM connector for corrosion, bent pins, water damage or loose terminals. Repair or reseal connector as needed.
  6. Verify BCM ground(s). Measure voltage drop between BCM negative terminal/ground pin and chassis ground while operating circuits.
  7. Backprobe CAN High and CAN Low at the BCM connector with key on. Verify idle voltages and differential during activity. Compare to specification.
  8. If CAN voltages abnormal, trace CAN wiring for short to battery/ground or open circuit. Disconnect suspect nodes/modules to isolate the fault.
  9. If the CAN bus shows heavy error counts or bus-off, locate the offending module by disconnecting non-critical modules one at a time until communication restores.
  10. Repair wiring, terminals, or replace damaged connectors. After repairs, clear codes and attempt to re-establish communication.
  11. If wiring and power/ground are verified good and bus signals are correct but BCM does not respond, consider BCM replacement or reprogramming per manufacturer procedures.
  12. After repair or replacement, reprogram/configure BCM as required, clear codes, and perform functional tests and road test to confirm resolution.

Likely causes

  • Loss of BCM power or ground (fuse, relay, connector)
  • Physical connector or wiring fault at BCM (corrosion, water ingress)
  • CAN bus wiring short/open or missing termination
  • Faulty BCM (internal electronics or corrupted software)
  • Another module on the bus causing CAN bus-off
