Lost Communication With Navigation Display Module

Causes

  • Faulty or disconnected wiring between navigation display and bus
  • Loose, corroded or damaged connector at navigation display or gateway module
  • Blown fuse or no power/ground to the navigation display
  • CAN bus short, open, high resistance or missing termination
  • Other module on bus in bus-off state or network fault
  • Software/firmware incompatibility or module internal failure

Symptoms

  • Navigation screen blank, frozen, or unresponsive
  • Navigation features unavailable or error message about module
  • Other infotainment features may be affected
  • DTC U0162 stored in gateway or body control module
  • Intermittent behavior (works sometimes, then communication lost)

What to check

  • Read stored and pending codes from all modules; note freeze frame and related U-codes
  • Check for other U-codes (lost communications with other modules) to identify a network-wide issue
  • Verify battery voltage nominal (11–14.5 V) at vehicle and at navigation display
  • Inspect fuses and power feeds for the navigation display
  • Visually inspect connectors and wiring at the navigation display and gateway/module for damage or corrosion
  • Back-probe or disconnect connector and check for solid ground (close to 0 Ω) and power presence

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage at module power pin: typically 11–14.5 V
  • Ground continuity: low resistance to chassis/vehicle ground (
  • CAN bus idle voltages (recessive): CANH ≈ 2.5 V, CANL ≈ 2.5 V
  • CAN bus dominant state (active): CANH ≈ 3.5 V, CANL ≈ 1.5 V (differential ~1.5–3.0 V depending on transceivers)
  • Bus termination resistance (power off): ≈ 60 Ω typical (two 120 Ω resistors in parallel)
  • No communication / no CAN frames from navigation display when monitoring with a capable scan tool or scope

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scan tool; read all modules and record U0162 plus any additional U-codes or freeze frame data.
  2. Confirm symptoms (blank screen, errors). Check for recent repairs or aftermarket installs that could affect wiring.
  3. Verify vehicle battery voltage and inspect fuses/power distribution for the navigation display circuit. Repair any power issues.
  4. Visually inspect connectors/wiring at the navigation display and any intermediate modules (gateway, BCM). Unplug and inspect pins for corrosion or damage.
  5. Back-probe the display connector: verify proper power and ground presence and measure CANH/CANL idle voltages per signal parameters.
  6. With a scan tool or oscilloscope monitor CAN traffic. Verify other modules are transmitting and whether the navigation display sends any frames. If entire bus is dead, trace to gateway and check termination.
  7. Measure termination resistance between CANH and CANL with ignition off; repair open or incorrect termination.
  8. Perform wiggle tests and isolate sections of harness to reproduce the fault; check for intermittent opens or shorts.
  9. If wiring and power/ground are good and bus traffic is correct but the display does not communicate, attempt software reflash/update per manufacturer service procedures if available.
  10. If reflashing fails and all wiring/network checks are good, consider replacing the navigation display module. Reprogram/configure replacement per manufacturer instructions.
  11. Clear codes and verify repair by monitoring for return of U0162 and confirming normal operation during a road test or extended scan-tool session.

Likely causes

  • Intermittent or corroded connector at the navigation display
  • Power or ground missing at display (blown fuse, disconnected splice)
  • CAN low/high open or short near the display or at a splice
  • Bus termination missing or one module has gone bus-off
  • Failed navigation display module or corrupted software
