U0169
Lost Communication With Sunroof Control Module
Causes
- Open or shorted CAN/LIN communication wiring
- Blown fuse or lost power to the sunroof module
- Bad ground at the sunroof module
- Corroded or disconnected connector(s)
- Water intrusion or physical damage to the module or harness
- Faulty sunroof control module
Symptoms
- Sunroof inoperative or unresponsive to switch
- No sunroof module listed on diagnostic network scan
- Other modules report related communication DTCs
- Possible illumination of a generic communication warning lamp
- Intermittent operation of sunroof or related functions
- Stored U0169 in vehicle fault memory
What to check
- Read vehicle with a scan tool; confirm U0169 and note freeze-frame/ignition state
- Verify whether the sunroof module appears on the network (module list)
- Inspect fuse(s) for sunroof module and check for battery voltage at fuse
- Visually inspect sunroof module connector and harness for corrosion, pin damage, or water
- Check and measure battery voltage at the module power pin with key ON
- Check ground continuity from module ground pin to chassis battery negative
Signal parameters
- Battery feed to module: ~12 V (key ON) and stable
- Ground: near 0 ohms continuity to chassis negative
- CAN bus idle voltages (approx): CAN H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN L ≈ 2.5 V common-mode
- CAN dominant state (approx): CAN H ~3.5 V, CAN L ~1.5 V during activity
- Termination resistance: ~60 ohms between CAN H and CAN L (two 120 ohm terminators in parallel)
- Typical CAN baud rates used: 125 kbps, 250 kbps, or 500 kbps (manufacturer dependent)
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect a capable scan tool. Confirm U0169, note ignition state and any related codes. Attempt to communicate with the sunroof module.
- Verify whether the module appears on the module list or network. If absent, continue physical checks.
- Inspect the sunroof module connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, water, or damage. Repair or dry as needed.
- Check the sunroof module power fuse(s). Verify battery voltage at the fuse and at the module power pin with key ON.
- Verify ground: measure continuity between module ground pin and battery negative. Repair high-resistance grounds.
- Measure CAN H and CAN L voltages at the module connector with ignition ON and while operating the sunroof switch. Compare to expected values.
Likely causes
- Disconnected or corroded connector at the sunroof module
- Blown fuse or missing battery feed to the module
- Open or shorted CAN high/low wires between module and gateway
- Failed sunroof control module electronics
- Faulty ground or high-resistance ground connection
- CAN bus termination fault (open or incorrect resistance)
