Causes

  • Phone control module failure
  • Power or ground missing at the phone control module
  • Open/short in CAN or LIN communication wiring
  • Faulty connector or corrosion at module or gateway
  • Network termination or bus wiring fault
  • Software/firmware mismatch or module not programmed

Symptoms

  • No phone or Bluetooth functionality from infotainment
  • Phone menu missing or greyed out on head unit
  • Hands-free calls not working or audio not routed
  • Driver information/warning message about phone module or communication
  • Related modules reporting additional U0xxx communication codes
  • Intermittent loss of phone features or radio audio dropouts

What to check

  • Confirm U0197 present and record freeze frame and occurrence count with dealer-level scanner
  • Check for additional U0xxx codes in other modules (gateway, head unit, BCM)
  • Inspect fuses and relays for the phone/infotainment circuit
  • Visually inspect module connectors and wiring for corrosion, damage, or water ingress
  • Verify battery voltage and chassis ground at module connector with key on
  • Measure CAN high/low idle voltages and check bus termination resistance

Signal parameters

  • Module supply voltage: ~11–14 V with ignition ON
  • Ground continuity: near 0 Ω to chassis (voltage drop under load < 0.5 V)
  • CAN bus idle voltage: ~2.5 V on CAN High and CAN Low (differential ≈ 0 V)
  • CAN bus differential when active: typical square wave ±1 V around 2.5 V
  • Bus termination resistance (both ends present): ≈ 60 Ω across CAN high and low
  • LIN line idle: near battery voltage (dependent on network); low pulses when active

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use a compatible diagnostic tool to confirm U0197 and check for related codes and module presence on the network.
  2. Check fuses and supply voltages at the phone control module connector; verify key ON battery voltage and good ground.
  3. Visually inspect and disconnect/reconnect the module connector(s); look for bent pins, corrosion, water intrusion, or pushed-out terminals.
  4. With scanner connected, attempt to communicate with the phone control module. If no response, backprobe CAN/LIN and supply pins and monitor communication while a known-good module response is attempted.
  5. Measure CAN High/Low voltages and differential; measure termination resistance between CAN high and CAN low with ignition OFF. Replace/add missing termination if required.
  6. If CAN wiring shows short to battery/ground or opens, trace and repair harness faults (repair, replace sections, or repair pins as needed).
  7. If wiring and power/ground are good but module does not respond, check for required software updates or reprogramming procedures from manufacturer before replacing module.
  8. If replacing module, ensure proper programming/coding and re-run communication checks and full system scan. Clear codes and perform functional test (pair phone, test hands-free calls).
  9. If problem is intermittent, perform wiggle testing and road test while monitoring network traffic or capture bus data with oscilloscope/diagnostic tool to identify faults under load or vibration.

Likely causes

  • Blown fuse or missing 12 V supply to phone control module
  • Corroded or loose connector at module or gateway module
  • CAN high/low or LIN wiring shorted to battery or ground
  • Broken CAN bus termination (open or incorrect resistance)
  • Phone control module internal fault or failed processor
  • Recent software update or module replacement left unprogrammed
