Causes

  • Open or shorted wiring in CAN/data circuit to the PGSCM
  • Faulty or corroded connector at the PGSCM or along the harness

What to check

  • Scan for all stored and pending U-codes and note freeze-frame data
  • Verify battery voltage is within specification (typically 11–14.5 V) with engine off and cranking
  • Check fuses and power feeds for the PGSCM and associated control modules
  • Visually inspect PGSCM connector and harness for corrosion, damage, water intrusion, or poor terminal retention
  • Check for presence of PGSCM on network using a capable scan tool (module list, ID request)
  • Measure CAN High/Low voltages at the PGSCM connector with key ON, engine OFF

Signal parameters

  • CAN High (recessive): ~2.5 V (nominal) with key ON, engine OFF
  • CAN Low (recessive): ~2.5 V (nominal); dominant state: CANH ~3.5 V, CANL ~1.5 V
  • CAN differential (dominant) ≈ 2.0 V; differential (recessive) ≈ 0 V
  • Typical CAN bus speeds: commonly 500 kb/s or 250 kb/s depending on vehicle; some networks use 125 kb/s or single-wire CAN
  • Module power supply: nominal battery voltage range 11–14.5 V (verify vehicle-specific spec)
  • Ground resistance: module ground to chassis should be very low (

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record all codes and freeze-frame data. Note if U01B2 is permanent or intermittent and any related U-codes.
  2. Confirm basic system power: measure battery voltage and check fuses/relays that feed the PGSCM and gateway/TCU.
  3. With the scan tool, verify whether the PGSCM appears in the module list and whether live data/messages are present or time out.
  4. Visually inspect the PGSCM connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, moisture, or physical damage. Repair any obvious issues.
  5. Backprobe PGSCM harness connector (reference wiring diagram). Verify power feed(s) and ground(s) with key ON. Repair as needed.
  6. Measure CAN High/Low voltages at the PGSCM connector with key ON, engine OFF. Compare to expected values in 'signal_params.'

  • Blown fuse or lost power/ground to PGSCM
  • CAN bus short (to battery or ground) or open between modules
