Causes

  • Open, short, or high-resistance wiring on the CAN/LIN bus to the Remote Function Actuation module
  • Poor or lost module power or ground (battery feed, fused supply)
  • Corroded or loose connector at the module or harness
  • Failed Remote Function Actuation module (internal electronics)
  • Faulty or missing CAN/LIN termination resistor or wrong bus topology
  • Intermittent module wake-up or software/configuration mismatch

Symptoms

  • Key fob/remote functions do not work (lock/unlock, remote start, tailgate)
  • Instrument cluster or message center displays communication or module missing warnings
  • Intermittent or no response from remote features while vehicle functions still operate normally
  • Related devices on same network may show faults or reduced function
  • Vehicle may fail to recognize smart key or not allow remote start

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and full DTC list with a capable scan tool; note any other U-codes present
  • Attempt communication with the Remote Function Actuation module using the scan tool
  • Verify vehicle battery voltage and check charging system if low voltage present
  • Inspect connectors and harness at the remote function module and BCM for corrosion, damage, and secure pins
  • Visually inspect CAN/LIN wiring for damage, repairs, splices, or rodent chew
  • Check fuses and relay(s) supplying the remote function module

Signal parameters

  • Nominal idle conditions: CAN_H ≈ 2.5V, CAN_L ≈ 2.5V (differential ≈ 0V)
  • Dominant bus state (active transmit): CAN_H ≈ 3.5V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5V (differential ≈ 2V)
  • Typical CAN termination: two 120 Ω resistors in parallel (≈60 Ω) seen between CAN_H and CAN_L at the harness
  • Expected CAN bus data activity: periodic frames from BCM and peripheral modules when key is on; appearance of remote module messages when remote functions are used
  • If using LIN: idle ≈ battery voltage through pull-up; LIN signal pulses to ground when transmitting

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a professional scan tool and read all U and B codes; record freeze-frame data. Clear codes and see if U0214 returns.
  2. Verify battery voltage ≥12.4 V (engine off) and stable during testing; check charging system if necessary.
  3. Attempt to communicate with the Remote Function Actuation module via the scan tool. If no response, check module power and ground circuits for correct voltages and continuity to chassis ground and fused supplies.
  4. Visually inspect and disconnect connectors to the module and BCM; look for bent pins, corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals. Securely reseat connectors.
  5. Measure CAN_H and CAN_L voltages at the module connector with ignition ON and keyless events while monitoring for activity with an oscilloscope or a scan-tool’s CAN data viewer.
  6. Measure resistance between CAN_H and CAN_L with ignition off; expected ≈60 Ω. If open or significantly different, inspect termination resistors and network wiring for opens/shorts.
  7. If a short to battery/ground is suspected, isolate sections by disconnecting other modules on the same bus until the fault disappears to locate the offending harness/module.
  8. Perform a wiggle test on suspect wiring while monitoring communications to attempt to reproduce the fault.
  9. If wiring and power/ground are good and the module still won’t communicate, follow manufacturer procedure to reprogram or replace the Remote Function Actuation module and then reinitialize/register remotes as required.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and verify normal operation, recheck for recurrence, and confirm no additional network codes remain.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at the remote function module or BCM
  • Damaged CAN/LIN wiring (pinched, chafed, rodent damage) between BCM and remote function module
  • Blown/failed supply fuse or weak ground for remote function module
  • Failed remote function actuation module
  • Faulty termination resistor or additional device on bus creating partial short
