Lost communication with the seat control module E

Causes

  • Faulty or unpowered seat control module
  • Blown fuse or disabled power supply to the seat module
  • Damaged, corroded, or disconnected connector or wiring to the module
  • Open, short or high-resistance CAN/LIN bus wiring (short to ground/voltage)
  • Missing or incorrect CAN/LIN termination
  • Faulty gateway/BCM or other network node preventing routing

Symptoms

  • Seat adjustment, memory, heating or ventilation functions inoperative
  • Seat-related warnings or U0246 shown on diagnostic tool or dash
  • Intermittent seat function (works sometimes, then stops)
  • Multiple network communication errors or other modules reporting seat module missing
  • Possible increased battery drain if module waking repeatedly

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending DTCs and freeze-frame data with a full dealer-level scanner
  • Verify vehicle battery voltage is stable (>12.2 V) and charging system normal
  • Check fuses and relays related to seat modules and body control module
  • Visually inspect seat module connectors and harness for damage, corrosion, water ingress or aftermarket taps
  • Confirm presence of the seat module on the network with a scan tool (module list / serial presence)
  • Check communication on CAN and/or LIN lines at the seat module connector with meter/oscilloscope

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus recessive state: CAN_H and CAN_L both near mid-supply (~2.5V).
  • CAN dominant state: CAN_H ~3.5V, CAN_L ~1.5V (differential ~2V) during message frames.
  • Typical bus termination: ~60 ohms measured between CAN_H and CAN_L (two 120 ohm resistors in parallel).
  • LIN bus: single-wire idle pulled to battery/backup voltage when awake; line is pulled low for data pulses.
  • Module supply voltage: expected battery/ignition feed present at module power pin when ignition is on.

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scan tool; record U0246 and any related network DTCs and freeze-frame data.
  2. Verify battery voltage and charge state. Low voltage can cause modules to drop from the network.
  3. Check fuses/relays for the seat control circuits and verify power and ground at the seat module connector.
  4. Inspect the seat module connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, or poor pin fit. Repair or reseat as needed.
  5. With ignition on, check CAN/LIN activity at the seat module connector: verify idle voltages and that messages are present. Perform a wiggle test to identify intermittent wiring faults.
  6. Measure bus termination resistance (approx. 60 ohms across CAN_H and CAN_L) with ignition off. Investigate open or low-resistance shorts.
  7. If the seat module has supply and network signals but is not responding, try a module wake/reset procedure per OEM (soft reset or power-cycle).
  8. Check for and install any OEM software/firmware updates or reprogram the module if required. Verify correct part number and calibration.
  9. If wiring, power and gateway are confirmed good and the module still fails to communicate, replace the seat control module and reprogram/configure as OEM specifies.
  10. After repairs, clear codes, confirm the module appears on the network, and road test to ensure functions and DTCs do not return.

Likely causes

  • Loose or corroded connector at the seat module
  • Blown fuse or relay supplying module power
  • CAN bus short (pinched wire) between seat module and gateway
  • Seat control module internal failure
  • Recent module replacement not programmed or incorrect software version
