Lost Communication With Image Processing Sensor E

AI status

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Faulty image processing sensor (camera or dedicated image ECU)
  • Open, short or high-resistance wiring in data bus (CAN, Ethernet, or manufacturer-specific link)
  • Loss of power or ground to the sensor
  • Connector corrosion, damage or poor seating
  • Module software/firmware mismatch or module initialization failure
  • Bus driver or gateway module fault

Symptoms

  • One or more camera/vision-based ADAS features disabled (lane assist, traffic sign recognition, automatic braking)
  • Relevant dash warning lamp or message (camera fault, ADAS unavailable)
  • Stored U0269 code (and possibly other network-related U-codes)
  • Intermittent function of camera-based systems
  • No image seen on diagnostics or central display (if applicable)

What to check

  • Retrieve all network and camera-related DTCs and freeze-frame data with a capable scan tool
  • Check for related U-codes or multiple module failures (gateway, BCM, camera modules)
  • Visually inspect camera E, mounting, lens, and harness for damage, water, or corrosion
  • Verify camera power and ground at the connector (battery voltage, chassis ground) with key ON
  • Inspect fuses and any camera power relays
  • Check connector mating, pins and terminal condition; reseat connectors

Signal parameters

  • CAN High/Low differential voltage (idle ~2.5V, active transitions) or Automotive Ethernet link state
  • Sensor supply voltage (typically battery ~12V or regulated 5V) at camera connector
  • Ground continuity/resistance to chassis ground
  • Module 'alive' or heartbeat message frequency (messages/sec) on the bus
  • CRC or packet error count, link negotiation status (for Ethernet/GMSL systems)
  • Current draw on sensor power pin (excessive or zero indicating short/open)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use a full-function scan tool to read freeze frame, all related DTCs and module status. Note time stamps and whether code is current or historical.
  2. Verify whether the fault is limited to Image Processing Sensor E or multiple sensors/modules. If many modules report loss of communication, suspect gateway/power or bus issue.
  3. Visually inspect the sensor, harness and connector for damage, water ingress or disconnected clips. Repair/replace damaged harness or connector as needed.
  4. With ignition ON, measure sensor supply voltage and ground at the sensor connector. Compare to specification. Repair power or ground faults (fuse, relay, wiring) before replacing modules.
  5. Monitor the vehicle network with a scope or capable scan tool: look for expected sensor messages, bus errors, CRC failures or link negotiation faults. If messages are present but corrupted, suspect transceiver or cabling.
  6. Wiggle-test harness while monitoring coms to find intermittent connection faults. Repair splices or broken conductors.
  7. If wiring and power/ground are good, try replacing the camera/sensor module (if available and supported) or swap with a known-good unit where possible to confirm.
  8. If replacement sensor resolves code, program/calibrate according to manufacturer procedure. If not, inspect gateway/module transceivers and update module software/firmware per TSBs.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform a functional test / road test to verify fault does not return. Re-check with scan tool for reappearance or related codes.

Likely causes

  • Damaged camera connector or cable (pin damage, corrosion, bent pins)
  • Blown fuse or failed power supply rail to the sensor (12V/5V depending on design)
  • Faulty camera module (internal failure)
  • Failed CAN/Ethernet transceiver on the camera or gateway module
  • Faulty gateway or zone module blocking messages
  • Improperly seated replacement module or recent service that disconnected harness
