Causes

What to check

  • Use a factory scanner or OBD-II tool to read U026E and any related codes; record freeze frame and module IDs
  • Check for other communication codes (e.g., other module U-codes) to identify a wider bus issue
  • Visually inspect sensor connector for corrosion, bent pins, moisture, or damage
  • Check related fuses and relays for the image sensor power feed
  • Verify battery voltage and charging system are within normal range
  • Backprobe power and ground at the sensor connector with ignition on to confirm proper supply and ground

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus idle voltages: CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V (common-mode); differential voltage near 0 V at recessive state
  • CAN dominant state: typical differential ~2.0 V (CAN_H rises, CAN_L falls) — values vary by vehicle
  • Expected periodic 'heartbeat' message from image sensor (frequency varies by manufacturer, commonly 1–20 Hz) — verify presence of sensor-specific message ID and rate with a CAN sniffer
  • Supply voltage to sensor: vehicle battery nominal ~12 V (verify within battery tolerance with ignition on)
  • Ground resistance: low ohms to chassis ground (near 0 Ω)
  • Termination resistance across CAN_H and CAN_L: typically ~60 ohms for a single terminated bus (check vehicle-specific topology)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scan tool and record all stored codes, freeze frame data and module communication status. Note related modules reporting loss of comms.
  2. Attempt a controlled key cycle and re-scan; attempt to communicate directly with the image sensor module (if supported) to confirm persistent loss.
  3. Visually inspect the sensor, mounting area and connector for water, corrosion, pin damage or impact. Repair or replace damaged connector components.
  4. Check fuses/relays powering the sensor; backprobe the sensor connector for battery/supply voltage and ignition-switched power with key ON.
  5. Verify good ground at the sensor connector; measure voltage drop between sensor ground and known chassis ground while cranking/with system active.
  6. Inspect CAN wiring from sensor to gateway/CAN junction for mechanical damage, shorts to chassis, or poor splices. Repair any damaged wiring.
  7. Measure CAN bus resistance across CAN_H and CAN_L to confirm proper termination (~60 ohms or vehicle-specific).
  8. Use an oscilloscope or CAN bus analyzer to view physical layer: confirm valid CAN waveform, check for noise, stuck dominant state, or missing expected message IDs/heartbeat from the image sensor.
  9. If wiring, fuses and bus are good but no messages from sensor, attempt sensor power-cycle and then perform a sensor module reset/re-initialization per manufacturer procedure.
  10. If module still does not communicate, check for available software/firmware updates or reflash options; if not applicable, consider replacing the image processing sensor module and then perform calibration if required.
  11. After repair, clear codes and verify system operation on-road or via directed tests; re-scan to ensure U026E does not return.
