Causes

  • Incorrect or incomplete software flash/update of the EPS module
  • Replacement EPS module with incompatible software or part number
  • Corrupted module firmware
  • Battery or power interruption during programming
  • Incompatible calibration data from other control modules (ECU/BCM/ABS)
  • CAN bus communication errors or wiring faults causing corrupted data

Symptoms

  • EPS (power steering) warning light or master warning illuminated
  • Reduced or no power steering assist (heavy steering)
  • Steering feel abnormal or intermittent assist
  • Multiple communication-related codes present on other modules
  • Stored module software/version info not readable or shows mismatch
  • Possible limp or reduced functionality related to steering safety

What to check

  • Scan vehicle with a dealer‑level or capable diagnostic tool and read all U and related codes; record module software and part numbers
  • Review vehicle service history for recent EPS/module replacement or software updates
  • Check battery state of charge and charging system; ensure stable voltage (12–14.8 V) before programming
  • Visually inspect EPS connectors, ground straps, and CAN bus wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose pins
  • Check for other communication faults on the CAN network (other modules reporting errors)
  • Verify VIN/configuration in the scan tool matches the installed module part number and software level

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage at module: nominal 12–14.8 V during diagnostics/programming
  • CAN bus idle voltage: ~2.5 V on CAN High and CAN Low relative to ground (verify with scope or meter)
  • EPS CAN message frequency: verify expected periodic messages (varies by model, typically 10–100 Hz)
  • Module identification parameters: Part number, hardware ID, software/firmware version strings readable via OEM tool
  • UDS/Diagnostic session availability: ability to enter programming/session mode and read SW levels
  • Checksum or signature fields reported by EPS firmware when queried with OEM tool

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Use an OEM-capable scan tool to read and record U0320 plus any other active/pending codes and freeze frame data.
  2. Record EPS module part number, hardware ID, and software/firmware version. Compare to vehicle build data and OEM database.
  3. Confirm recent repairs or programming attempts. If a programming event occurred, verify it completed successfully and battery was stable.
  4. Check battery voltage and charging system; recharge or connect a battery maintainer before any reprogramming.
  5. Inspect EPS connectors, grounds, and CAN wiring for damage, corrosion, or backprobes for proper signals.
  6. Verify CAN network health: check for other modules with communication errors and measure CAN bus voltages and message activity with a scope or advanced scan tool.
  7. If communication and wiring are good, attempt to update/reflash the EPS software to the correct OEM version using the manufacturer's programming procedure and correct calibration files.
  8. If reflash is not possible or fails, confirm the installed EPS is the correct part for the vehicle. If incorrect, replace with correct part and program per OEM instructions.
  9. After successful programming, clear codes and perform a road test and functional steering checks; re-scan for reappearance of U0320.
  10. If problem persists after correct software and wiring verification, consult OEM technical support/TSBs for module replacement criteria or advanced diagnostics.

Likely causes

  • Recent EPS replacement or dealer/service performed software reflash with wrong calibration
  • Module firmware version does not match vehicle configuration or VIN‑specific data
  • Programming was interrupted (low battery or loss of power) leaving module in an inconsistent state
  • CAN network errors preventing modules from verifying version/signature data
  • Incorrect part installed (used or non‑OEM unit) with incompatible software

Fault status

⚠️ Status
U0320 — Power Steering Control Module software incompatibility detected. EPS may be disabled or limited until module software is reprogrammed or corrected.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0-4.0 hours
