Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record exact trouble code(s), freeze frame and occurrence count. Note conditions when code set.
  2. Check battery state of charge and charging system; charge battery and retest to rule out low-voltage effects.
  3. Inspect connectors, pins and wiring for the VNM and other nodes on the same bus; repair any corrosion or damage.
  4. Use a scan tool to verify all expected modules are present and to view live CAN/LIN bus data and message IDs.
  5. Measure physical layer with a multimeter/oscilloscope: check CAN_H/CAN_L idle and dominant voltages and compare to expected values.
  6. Measure termination resistance across CAN_H and CAN_L (engine off): should be approximately 60 Ω. Isolate segments if value incorrect.
  7. Check for short to battery or ground on CAN lines and for high resistance to ground at module grounds.
  8. Disconnect suspected modules one at a time (with ignition off and following safe procedures) to isolate the source of invalid frames.
  9. If harness and power/ground are good, compare module software/calibration part numbers with OEM specifications and check for required reflash or updates.
  10. If a specific module is identified as sending invalid data, attempt reprogramming/reinitialization per OEM procedure. Replace module only after confirming hardware failure.
  11. Clear codes and perform road test or recreate conditions to verify repair; monitor bus for recurrence and capture scope traces if intermittent.
