Causes

  • Corrupted or out-of-range data sent by Battery Energy Control Module B
  • CAN/LIN bus wiring damage, short, or open
  • Poor connector contact or corrosion at BECM-B or gateway module
  • Low battery/auxiliary voltage or poor ground affecting module operation
  • Faulty CAN transceiver or module internal failure
  • Software mismatch or missing calibration/programming after replacement

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or battery/EV system warning illuminated
  • Incorrect or missing SOC/pack voltage/current readings on cluster or HMI
  • Reduced charging or propulsion functionality, limp-home or reduced power mode
  • Inability to communicate with BECM-B via scan tool
  • Intermittent faults that may clear after key cycle or battery disconnect

What to check

  • Retrieve all stored U-codes and freeze frame data with an OEM-capable scan tool
  • Verify BECM-B appears on the network topology and can be queried by the scan tool
  • Inspect connectors and wiring at BECM-B, CAN junctions and gateway for damage/corrosion
  • Measure battery and auxiliary supply voltages and inspect ground points
  • Measure idle voltages on CANH and CANL (approx. half battery voltage, ~2.5V typical) with key on, engine/pack off
  • Check CAN bus termination resistance (around 60 ohms across CANH-CANL with power off, vehicle dependent)

Signal parameters

  • CAN message ID for BECM-B (vehicle-specific)
  • Data Length Code (DLC) and expected message frequency / alive rate
  • Alive counter/sequence number and checksum/CRC fields
  • State of Charge (SOC) — expected 0–100% (vehicle-dependent scaling)
  • Pack voltage — expected range vehicle dependent (report as volts)
  • Pack current — expected polarity and A-range depends on vehicle

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect an OEM-level scan tool. Read and record all DTCs and freeze frame data from all modules, focusing on battery/EV system and gateway modules.
  2. Clear codes, perform ignition cycles and attempt to re-create the fault while monitoring live data from BECM-B and gateway.
  3. Verify vehicle battery and auxiliary supply voltages and check primary ground connections for corrosion or looseness.
  4. Visually inspect BECM-B connector and adjacent wiring for bent pins, corrosion, damaged insulation or signs of water ingress; repair as required.
  5. Confirm BECM-B is present on the network (module addressable) and that its expected CAN messages are being transmitted at the correct frequency using a scan tool or CAN monitor.
  6. Measure CAN bus voltages (CANH/CANL idle) and check termination resistance between CANH and CANL. If abnormal, isolate and repair wiring/terminator issues.
  7. If intermittent or noisy signals suspected, use an oscilloscope to examine waveform integrity and look for dominant/stuck conditions or excessive EMI.
  8. Check for conflicting/faulty nodes by disconnecting aftermarket devices or, if safe and per service manual, isolating BECM-B harness to see if bus behavior changes.
  9. Verify software/calibration levels for BECM-B and related modules. Reflash or reprogram per OEM procedures if mismatched or recommended by TSB.
  10. If wiring, grounds and power are good and communication errors persist, consider replacing BECM-B and program/couple it following factory procedures. After repair, clear codes and verify repair by road test and monitoring.

Likely causes

  • BECM-B transmitting corrupted messages (module fault or software)
  • Damaged/deteriorated wiring or connector at BECM-B or along CAN bus
  • CAN bus termination issue or short between CANH/CANL
  • Module not programmed/coded correctly after replacement
  • Intermittent low battery voltage or poor ground causing data errors
