Causes

  • Intermittent faults that clear and return after driving or vibration

What to check

  • Connect a professional scan tool: read U041B and any accompanying DTCs, record freeze frame and live data from EGS and related modules
  • Check for technical service bulletins (TSBs) or required software updates for any related modules
  • Visually inspect EGS module connector and wiring for corrosion, pin damage, water ingress, or chafing
  • Verify battery voltage while cranking and at key-on (should be ~11–15 V)
  • Measure supply and ground at the EGS connector (power pin ~battery voltage, ground near 0 Ω to chassis)
  • Check CAN bus idle voltages with a multimeter: CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V (recessive ~2.5–3.5V), CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V (recessive ~1.5–2.5V) and differential ~0 V recessive; use oscilloscope for waveform integrity and to see dominant bits

  • CAN bus idle voltages (typical): CAN_H ≈ 2.5–3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5–2.5 V; dominant bit differential ≈ 2.0 V
  • Expected termination resistance across CAN_H and CAN_L ≈ 60 Ω

  • EGS module ground: near 0 Ω continuity to chassis (-)
  • If available, exhaust-sensor outputs (NOx/temperature) should be within manufacturer ranges — verify with scan tool live data or service manual values

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record DTCs and freeze-frame with a scan tool; note related network codes. 2) Check for TSBs, software updates, and confirmed owner-applied modifications. 3) Visually inspect the EGS connector and harness for damage, corrosion, or water ingress; repair as needed. 4) Verify vehicle battery voltage and EGS supply/ground at the module connector. 5) Check CAN bus voltages with multimeter; if abnormal, use an oscilloscope to inspect waveforms for noise, missing frames or dominant bits. 6) Measure termination resistance across CAN_H and CAN_L (~60 Ω). 7) Backprobe or monitor EGS data on the scan tool while performing a wiggle test of wiring to identify intermittent faults. 8) If wiring and bus are good, attempt key-on reprogramming/reflash of EGS and central modules per factory procedures. 9) If reflash does not clear the fault and communication is verified good elsewhere on the bus, consider replacing the EGS module. 10) After repairs, clear codes and perform a verification drive; confirm no reoccurrence and proper live-data values.
