Causes

What to check

  • Capture freeze-frame and live data for steering angle while turning the steering wheel slowly left-right
  • Compare steering angle sensor output to wheel speed-based derived angle (if available) for plausibility
  • Check CAN bus health: error counters, bus-off events, and presence of related messages with a capable scan tool or oscilloscope
  • Visually inspect wiring harnesses and connectors at the steering column, sensor, ABS/ESP module and gateway for corrosion, pin damage or looseness
  • Measure supply voltage and ground at the steering angle sensor connector with ignition ON

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect manufacturer-level scan tool (e.g., VAG/ODIS) and read all stored codes across modules; record freeze-frame data.
  2. Monitor live steering angle value while slowly rotating steering wheel; verify value changes smoothly and returns to ~0° at straight ahead.
  3. Check for related CAN communications faults (U0073, bus-off, missing message). If CAN errors present, isolate by probing wiring and checking for short to ground/power.
  4. Visually inspect and gently wiggle connectors and wiring from steering column to ABS/ESP and gateway while observing live data for intermittent changes.
  5. Measure sensor supply and ground at connector; compare to specified values. Repair any power/ground issues before replacing modules.
  6. If wiring and power are good but data is implausible or missing, perform steering angle sensor basic setting/zero-point calibration per factory procedure using the diagnostic tool.
  7. If calibration fails or values remain incorrect, swap/connect a known-good steering angle sensor or steering column module (if available) to confirm sensor vs module fault.
  8. If a module was recently replaced or software updated, verify coding and software versions; re-flash or correct coding per manufacturer guidance.
  9. Clear codes and perform test drive to confirm fault does not return. If fault persists, escalate to module replacement or CAN network repair as indicated.
  10. Safety: follow airbag/steering column service precautions (battery disconnect protocols and clock spring handling) and use proper diagnostic equipment.
