Invalid Data Received From Tire Pressure Monitor Module

Completed

Causes
- Faulty or failing TPMS module
- Faulty TPMS sensor(s) (weak battery, corrupted ID, or bad data)
- CAN/LIN wiring problems, loose connectors, poor ground, or short
- Bus communication errors (terminator fault, high/low CAN voltage)
- Software/configuration mismatch after module replacement or update
- Radio frequency interference or aftermarket device interference
Symptoms
- TPMS warning lamp or message on instrument cluster
- Incorrect, missing, or rapidly changing tire pressure readings
- Intermittent TPMS warnings that clear after key cycle or re-learn
- Related drivability or stability control warnings if other modules ignore TPMS data
- No communication with TPMS module when scanned
What to check
- Read all stored freeze frame data and related U-codes with a capable scan tool
- Verify ignition state and that the TPMS lamp/message pattern matches DTC
- Scan the network to confirm TPMS module presence and check message frequency
- Inspect TPMS module connectors and wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose pins
- Check TPMS module supply voltage and ground at the connector (reference vehicle spec)
- Monitor TPMS CAN/LIN messages for framing errors, checksum/CRC failures, or invalid payloads
Signal parameters
- Message ID and CAN DLC for TPMS messages
- Byte fields: sensor ID, tire pressure, temperature, status flags, CRC/Checksum
- Message frequency (expected interval between TPMS broadcasts)
- Voltage on CAN high and CAN low lines (dominant/recessive levels)
- TPMS sensor battery voltage (if provided in payload) or RF signal strength
- Module supply voltage and ground continuity
Diagnostic algorithm
- Record DTC, freeze frame and any accompanying U- or B- codes. Note when lamp illuminated.
- Verify TPMS warning behavior during key cycles. Attempt an ignition cycle to see if the DTC returns.
- Use a diagnostic tool to list TPMS sensor IDs and live data. Look for missing sensors, invalid IDs, or out-of-range pressures/temps.
- Inspect TPMS module connector and wiring for physical damage, corrosion, or poor ground. Wiggle test while monitoring communication for intermittent faults.
- Check module power and ground with a multimeter against vehicle specifications. Repair any supply/ground faults.
- Monitor CAN/LIN traffic with a scope or capable scan tool. Look for corrupted frames, incorrect voltages, or missing termination.
- If a single sensor is flagged, verify sensor battery and replace that sensor, then perform TPMS re-learn and re-check for U0430.
- If messages are corrupted or format is wrong and wiring is good, attempt reprogramming/configuration of the TPMS module or restore proper calibration level (use OEM procedures).
- If invalid data continues after wiring, power, and reprogramming are confirmed good, replace the TPMS module and re-check entire system and perform relearn procedure.
- After repairs, clear codes and road test to confirm the DTC does not return and TPMS readings are stable and plausible.
Likely causes
- TPMS module transmitting corrupted messages (module hardware or firmware fault)
- One or more TPMS sensors sending implausible pressure/temperature or invalid ID
- Damaged wiring harness, poor connector, or corrosion on the TPMS module connector
- CAN bus termination or voltage fault preventing proper message framing
- Incorrect module coding or incompatible replacement module
Fault status
Status
