Causes

What to check

  • Read all stored U and P codes and freeze frame data with a capable scan tool
  • Record which modules report communication with the Restriction Control Module and note missing responses
  • Check vehicle battery voltage (idle and while cranking); verify charging system operation
  • Visually inspect connectors and wiring harness to the Restriction Control Module for corrosion, damage, or bent pins
  • Check ground points and power feeds to the Restriction Control Module
  • Use a scan tool to view live CAN messages and module data streams for missing or malformed messages

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus idle voltage: approx. 2.5 V on CAN_H and CAN_L (recessive)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a factory-level or OEM-capable scan tool and read all modules; note any other U0xxx or communication-related faults
  2. Record freeze frame and repeated occurrence conditions (vehicle speed, ignition state, temperature)
  3. Verify and record battery voltage and charging system condition; correct low voltage issues before further tests
  4. Visually inspect wiring and connectors at the Restriction Control Module and related junctions; repair any damage or corrosion
  5. Confirm good ground and fused power supply at the module
  6. Check CAN bus physical layer: measure termination resistance and use an oscilloscope to inspect CAN_H/CAN_L for correct idle/dominant levels, noise, or missing edges
  7. If CAN physical layer is good, attempt to communicate with the Restriction Control Module directly with the scan tool; if module does not respond, check upstream gateway/module communication
  8. If another module is reported as the sender of corrupt data, trace and test that module/wiring as well
  9. If wiring and network are confirmed good, check for available software updates or known-service bulletins and reflash module software if required
  10. If reprogramming and wiring checks do not resolve the issue, consider replacing the Restriction Control Module only after confirming the replacement will be programmed with correct calibration
  11. Clear codes and perform functional test / road test to verify repair
