U0454
Invalid Data Received From Side Restraints Control Module - Right
Causes
- Faulty right side restraints control module (hardware or firmware)
- CAN/LIN network communication fault (open, short, high resistance, noise)
- Damaged or corroded wiring or connectors to the right side restraints module
- Incorrect or missing module programming/calibration
- Power supply (VBAT) or ground problem at the module
- Post-crash condition or previous deployment not properly repaired
Symptoms
- SRS/airbag warning lamp illuminated
- Side airbag or seatbelt pretensioner disabled for the right side
- Stored U0454 or related communication DTCs in scan tool
- Possible other network messages or modules reporting loss of data from right side restraints
- Vehicle may require SRS system reset or module reprogram after repair
What to check
- Obtain full scan of SRS and network modules; record DTCs and freeze frame data
- Check for any airbag deployment history or collision-related damage
- Visually inspect connector and wiring at the right side restraints module for corrosion, bent pins, chafing, or water intrusion
- Verify module receives proper battery voltage and a good ground (measure VBAT and ground at connector)
- Confirm the right side restraints module is present on the bus (module ID visible in scanner) and note message frequency
- Check CAN high/low voltages and resistance across bus (approx. 60 ohm termination when powered)
Signal parameters
- CAN bus: normal idle voltages CAN_H ~2.5V, CAN_L ~2.5V (biased); typical dominant/recessive swings when active
- Module supply: VBAT ~11–14.5V at connector when key on
- Ground continuity:
- Expected message interval: module SRS/status messages typically present every few hundred ms (varies by vehicle)
- Message payload: status bits/bytes for right side restraints should be within expected ranges (no invalid/offset values or checksum errors)
- Bus termination: ~60 ohm total resistance between CAN_H and CAN_L with ignition on
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect a capable scan tool and read all stored and pending codes. Note freeze frame and event data.
- Clear the code, cycle ignition, and see if U0454 returns and under what conditions (ignition on, engine start, door open, crash detect).
- Visually inspect the right side restraints module, harness, and connectors for damage, corrosion, or water intrusion. Repair any physical faults.
- Verify power and ground at the module connector. Repair wiring if VBAT or ground are out of spec.
- With a scope or multimeter, check CAN_H and CAN_L at the module connector for proper idle voltages and message activity. Compare to a known-good node if available.
- Check CAN bus termination and continuity to other control modules. Repair shorts/opens or improper splices.
- If wiring and bus checks pass, verify the module ID and software level. Reprogram or update module flash/calibration if manufacturer procedures indicate.
- If intermittent or corrupted messages persist, try substituting a known-good module only if you have proper vehicle-specific replacement and coding tools; recheck network communication.
- After any repair or replacement, clear codes and perform required SRS module initialization/calibration per OEM procedure. Confirm no new DTCs and that SRS lamp extinguishes.
- If issue remains after wiring and module replacement, consult manufacturer technical bulletins for module-specific faults or software fixes.
Likely causes
- Intermittent or failed CAN bus connection to the right side restraints module
- Corroded/loose connector at the right side restraints module
- Module internal fault (processor, memory, or sensor interface)
- Module was replaced/repaired and not configured/programmed correctly
- Short to battery or ground on the module data lines
