Causes

  • Faulty or unresponsive occupant classification (OCS) module
  • Damaged wiring, poor pin contact, or corrosion at OCS connectors (commonly under passenger seat)
  • CAN/LIN bus communication errors (shorts, high resistance, missing termination)
  • Intermittent or low battery/vehicle voltage during communication
  • Module software/firmware mismatch or recent incompatible replacement
  • Water intrusion or physical damage to seat sensors or OCS unit

Symptoms

  • Airbag/SRS warning lamp illuminated
  • Passenger airbag status incorrect or 'Passenger Airbag Off' message stuck
  • DTC U0455 stored (may be accompanied by other U-codes)
  • Some occupant classification-dependent functions disabled
  • Intermittent communication-related warnings or multiple network-related DTCs

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending DTCs from SRS and network modules; note freeze frame/more U-codes
  • Verify battery voltage is within spec (engine off and cranking) and charging system healthy
  • Visually inspect OCS connector and wiring under passenger seat for damage, corrosion, or water
  • Perform a wiggle test on seat harness while watching live data for disruptions
  • Check CAN bus wiring, connectors and termination; measure bus voltages and look for shorts
  • Using scan tool, request OCS module messages and verify message IDs, message frequency and payload validity

Signal parameters

  • Message ID / PGN and expected cycle time (verify presence and correct frequency)
  • Message length and expected data layout (bytes for occupancy status, sensor weights, flags)
  • Occupant classification status bits (seat occupied, sensor fault, passenger airbag enable/disable)
  • Sensor weight/force values (range checks and plausibility)
  • Checksum/CRC or message validation bytes (if applicable)
  • Message age / time since last valid message

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve full DTC list and freeze frame data from SRS and related modules. Record accompanying U-codes.
  2. Verify battery voltage and stable power supply. Recharge/replace battery if voltage low or unstable.
  3. Visually inspect and secure OCS module connector(s) and seat sensor harness under passenger seat. Look for corrosion, bent pins, water damage.
  4. With a scan tool, monitor live OCS messages on the network: confirm message ID, cycle time, payload plausibility and any checksum/validation failures.
  5. Perform wiggle and backprobing tests on power, ground and CAN/communication lines while watching for message dropouts or errors.
  6. If communication is absent or corrupted, trace and repair wiring (repair broken wires, clean/replace connectors) and retest.
  7. If wiring and bus integrity are good but messages remain invalid, check module software part number and update reprogram if required per published procedures.
  8. If software update not available or does not clear the condition, bench-test or replace the OCS module with a known-good unit and verify that valid messages appear and DTCs clear.
  9. After repair or replacement, perform any required OCS seat calibration/learn procedures and clear codes. Verify system operation and that the airbag lamp extinguishes.
  10. Confirm absence of related network DTCs and perform a road test to ensure fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • 1) Loose/corroded connector or damaged wiring at the OCS under the passenger seat
  • 2) OCS module internal fault producing invalid messages
  • 3) CAN bus error (dominant/short to voltage/ground, poor termination) corrupting OCS messages
  • 4) Recent replacement module that requires reprogramming or incompatible software
  • 5) Failed seat sensor (weight sensors) causing out-of-range values
