Causes

What to check

  • Verify module power (battery feed, fused supply) and ground circuits
  • Visually inspect CAN/LIN harness for chafing, breaks, or repairs
  • Measure CAN bus voltages at the module connector (CANH/CANL) and at a known-good node

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus idle voltages: CANH ≈ 2.5 V, CANL ≈ 2.5 V (recessive)
  • CAN bus dominant voltages: CANH ≈ 3.5 V, CANL ≈ 1.5 V (approximate)
  • Differential voltage: ~0 V (recessive) to ~2 V (dominant) — values may vary by vehicle
  • Message integrity: expected message IDs, length and checksum/CRC (if used) for ADS messages
  • Bus bit timing and bitrate (e.g., 500 kb/s, 250 kb/s) must match network specification

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a factory-capable scan tool and confirm U045F and any related U-codes. Record freeze-frame and occurrence conditions.
  2. Attempt to clear the code and perform the operation that set the fault to see if it returns and under what conditions.
  3. Inspect the ADS module connector and harness for obvious damage, corrosion, or loose pin(s); repair as needed.
  4. Verify module supply and ground with a DMM while exercising the system; repair poor power/ground connections.
  5. Check wiring continuity between ADS module and nearest gateway/controller; look for shorts to battery or ground.
  6. Use an oscilloscope or CAN bus analyzer to capture message traffic from the ADS module. Confirm correct message IDs, expected data length and timing, and that messages pass CRC/integrity checks.
