Causes

  • Faulty Door Control Module B (software or internal hardware failure)
  • Open, shorted, or corroded wiring/connectors to the door control module
  • Poor or intermittent module power or ground
  • CAN bus wiring fault, poor termination, or short to battery/ground
  • Module not configured or incorrect software calibration (mismatched programming)
  • Water intrusion or physical damage at the door module or connector

Symptoms

  • DTC U0501 stored in gateway/BCM diagnostic memory
  • One or more door functions inoperative (power locks, windows, mirrors, courtesy lamps) on affected door
  • Intermittent or permanent door chime / keyless entry faults
  • Other network modules showing related communication errors or limp modes
  • Instrument cluster warning message about a door system or network fault

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending fault codes from all modules; note freeze frame and related U-codes
  • Check battery state-of-charge and system voltage (should be ~12–14 V with key on/engine running)
  • Visually inspect the Door Control Module B connector(s) and door harness for corrosion, bent pins, or water intrusion
  • Check module power and ground at the module connector for good continuity and proper voltage
  • Scan CAN bus traffic: verify the Door Control Module B address is present and messages are valid
  • Check CAN H/L voltages with key on: nominal single-line voltages near 2.5 V; differential termination ~60 ohms

Signal parameters

  • Battery/supply voltage at module: 11–14 V with key on/engine running
  • Ground continuity: near 0 ohms to vehicle chassis
  • CAN bus idle voltage (CAN H and CAN L): ~2.5 V each; differential between H/L near 0 V idle
  • CAN differential when active: expect proper differential pulses when scanning bus traffic
  • Bus termination: approx. 60 ohms between CAN H and CAN L (with ignition off and bus connected)
  • Presence and frequency of Door Control Module B CAN messages (module address and expected message IDs)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Capture all stored codes from all control modules and note any other U-codes or modular faults.
  2. Verify battery voltage and ensure stable power; charge or connect stable supply if low.
  3. Inspect the door module connector and harness at the door hinge for corrosion, water, or broken wires; repair any physical damage.
  4. With connector attached, measure supply and ground at the module pins; repair poor power/ground before further testing.
  5. Use a capable CAN bus scan tool to observe traffic from Door Control Module B. Confirm whether the module transmits regular messages and that payloads look reasonable.
  6. If the module does not appear on the bus or sends corrupted frames, check continuity of CAN H/L to gateway/BCM and measure line voltages and termination resistance.
  7. Wiggle-test the harness while monitoring diagnostics and CAN traffic to reproduce intermittent faults at hinge points.
  8. If wiring and power are good but communication remains invalid, attempt software reflash/reprogramming per manufacturer procedures (consult Tech Info).
  9. If reprogramming fails or module remains faulty, replace Door Control Module B with a programmed unit and recheck network
  10. Clear codes and road-test to confirm repair; monitor for reoccurrence and repeat scans to verify no other modules report related faults.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at Door Control Module B or door harness (common with door modules)
  • Intermittent low battery/poor ground causing corrupt data
  • CAN bus fault (bad splice, short, or missing termination resistor)
  • Door Control Module B internal fault or failed firmware

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Invalid data or communication received from Door Control Module B. Door module messages are missing, corrupted, or outside expected parameters — communication fault present.
