Causes

What to check

  • Check for additional network codes (U0100, U0073, U0500, etc.) to identify broader CAN issues
  • Visually inspect connectors and wiring at Seat Control Module C for corrosion, bent pins, or water intrusion
  • Verify battery voltage and module supply at seat control module with key ON (should be within manufacturer spec, typically ~12–14V)
  • Check ground integrity for the seat control module (measure resistance to chassis ground)
  • Measure CAN High and CAN Low voltages at the seat module with ignition ON and engine OFF (idle recessive levels ~2.5V each; dominant pulses during traffic)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify the code: connect a full-function scan tool, retrieve U0511 and any related network codes; record freeze frame and whether code is active or intermittent.
  2. Inspect connectors/wiring: visually and physically inspect the seat module connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, pins pushed out, water damage, or signs of rodent damage. Wiggle test harness while watching live data for changes.
  3. Check power & ground: verify supply voltage to the seat module with key ON and test ground resistance to chassis. Repair any low supply or poor ground conditions.
  4. Check CAN physical layer: measure CANH/CANL voltages at the seat module, check for expected dominant/recessive levels and for excessive noise. Measure DC resistance across CANH–CANL (~60 Ω).
  5. Isolate network faults: if CAN bus short or noise suspected, disconnect seat module and see if other nodes recover or if other DTCs clear. If removing the module clears network errors, suspect internal module fault or short in harness near module.
  6. Attempt communication: use diagnostic tool to read live data from the seat control module. If the module does not respond or returns invalid frames, re-check wiring and power. If it responds but sends invalid values, consider software/configuration or internal failure.
  7. Software/compatibility: verify correct part number and programming level of the seat module for the vehicle. Check TSBs and manufacturer calibration updates; reflash or reprogram per service info if required.
  8. Repair or replace: if wiring, connector, power or ground issues are found, repair and retest. If wiring is good and communications remain invalid after software reflash, replace the seat control module and program/configure as required.
  9. Clear codes and test: after repairs, clear DTCs and perform a functional test and road test to confirm the fault does not return. Re-check network for new/related codes.
