Invalid Data Received From Charge Air Cooler Coolant Pump

Causes

  • Open, shorted or intermittent wiring/connectors between pump and control module or CAN bus
  • Failed or limited-function charge air cooler coolant pump
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay powering the pump
  • Corroded or damaged pump connector or ground
  • Controller (ECM/BCM) communication error or software fault
  • Low battery or supply voltage causing data corruption

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or warning message related to charge air cooler
  • Reduced turbo/boost control performance or limp mode in some vehicles
  • Intermittent or no operation of the intercooler coolant pump
  • Elevated charge-air or intake-air temperatures under load
  • Stored U-codes or related P/U codes for pump or communication faults

What to check

  • Read and record all active/pending/confirmed codes and freeze-frame data
  • Check battery voltage and charging system condition
  • Visual inspection of pump, harness, connector, fuses, and relay
  • Scan tool: view live data for pump status, commanded duty cycle, pump current, and related temperatures
  • Verify CAN bus network health (bus voltage, termination, error counters) if available
  • Backprobe pump connector for supply voltage, ground continuity, control signal (PWM) while commanding pump

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage to pump (typically battery voltage; 12 V nominal)
  • Control signal type: PWM duty cycle (%) or ON/OFF command
  • Pump current draw (amps) during operation
  • Reported pump status/feedback value from control module (if applicable)
  • CAN bus message presence and integrity (message ID and data bytes)
  • Charge-air cooler coolant temperature and intake-air temperature values

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all codes and freeze-frame; save logs of live data for pump commands and temperatures.
  2. Verify battery voltage (engine off and running). Low or unstable supply can corrupt data or disable pump.
  3. Inspect pump connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, or water entry; repair or replace damaged connectors.
  4. Check fuses and relays for the pump circuit; replace if blown or intermittent. Verify relay operation when pump is commanded.
  5. With a scan tool, command the pump on/off and observe feedback. If the module reports invalid data while the pump responds correctly, suspect network/module/software.
  6. Backprobe the pump connector while commanding pump: confirm battery supply present, control signal (PWM or switched ground), and good ground. Measure pump current while operating.
  7. If no supply or signal, trace wiring for open/short to the controlling module. Perform continuity and resistance checks to module and ground points.
  8. If wiring and supply are good but pump does not operate or draws excessive/zero current, remove and bench-test the pump by applying correct voltage and observing operation and current draw.
  9. If pump and wiring test good, check CAN bus health and other controllers for bus errors. Consider swapping or reprogramming the module if intermittent or corrupted messages persist.
  10. Repair or replace faulty components (connector, harness section, fuse/relay, pump, or module) as determined by tests. Clear codes and perform road/test cycle to confirm repair and that no invalid-data faults return.
  11. If suspecting software bug, check for Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) and perform module reflash/update per manufacturer procedures before replacing major components.

Likely causes

  • Water intrusion/corrosion at the pump connector causing intermittent signals
  • Pump motor seized or high internal resistance producing abnormal current draw
  • Open or high-resistance ground to pump or controller
  • Failed pump driver in the module (internal transistor/PWM driver)
  • Incorrect or stale module software/firmware causing message formatting errors
  • Blown in-line fuse or sticking relay supplying the pump
