Causes
- Faulty transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch B
- Damaged or corroded sensor connector or wiring harness
- Open, short to ground, or short to battery on sensor signal/reference/ground
- Faulty transmission control module (TCM) or powertrain control module (PCM)
- Intermittent connection (pin pushed out, bent pins, water intrusion)
- CAN or LIN communication bus fault (bad termination, short, open, transceiver failure)
Symptoms
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or Transmission warning lamp illuminated
- Transmission may enter limp/backup mode or have abnormal shift behavior
- Delayed or harsh shifts, inability to shift into certain gears
- Diagnostic trouble codes related to transmission sensors or communications present
- No/erratic fluid pressure data visible on a scan tool
What to check
- Retrieve all stored and pending codes and freeze frame data with a scan tool
- Verify battery voltage and ground integrity (while key on and engine running where applicable)
- Check for presence of the sensor on the network: verify TCM/PCM sees the module and other modules are communicating
- Inspect the sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, water intrusion, bent pins, or physical damage
- Backprobe the sensor connector and measure reference voltage, signal, and ground
- Check CAN/LIN bus voltages and termination resistances (look for opens or shorts)
Signal parameters
- Sensor types vary by application: may be a pressure switch (open/closed) or pressure sensor (analog 0–5 V).
- Typical reference supply: 5 V nominal (acceptable ~4.75–5.25 V) where sensor uses a reference.
- Analog signal typical range: ~0.1–4.9 V depending on pressure. Closed switch = near 0 V or battery depending on design; open = high impedance.
- CAN bus idle voltages: CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V; dominant state: CAN_H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V (differential ≈ 2.0 V).
- If LIN is used, the bus idles near battery voltage and is driven low for frames; check manufacturer specs.
Diagnostic algorithm
- Confirm the code and record freeze frame and live data. Note whether other communication U-codes are present.
- Verify battery and ground values. Correct any low-voltage or poor-ground conditions before further testing.
- Inspect the transmission fluid pressure sensor/switch B connector and wiring for damage or corrosion. Repair any obvious issues.
- With connector connected, backprobe reference, signal and ground pins. Compare measured values to expected ranges from signal_params.
- If the sensor uses CAN or LIN, check bus voltages at the sensor connector and at the TCM/PCM. Verify correct termination and absence of shorts.
- Perform a wiggle test on harness while monitoring live data for intermittent loss. Repair any chafing or broken conductors.
- If wiring and bus appear good, substitute a known-good sensor (if available) or measure sensor resistance/continuity per manufacturer spec.
- If replacement sensor does not restore communication, test or swap the TCM/PCM or inspect CAN transceiver circuits and module grounds/power.
- After repairs, clear codes, perform a controlled road test and re-scan to ensure the code does not return and that transmission behavior is normal.
- If intermittent or complex network faults persist, use an oscilloscope to capture bus traffic and voltage transients for advanced analysis.
Likely causes
- Corroded/loose connector at the sensor or module
- Broken or chafed harness where it flexes near the transmission
- Failed sensor (internal electronics) or sensor power/reference failure
- Faulty CAN/LIN transceiver in TCM/PCM or harness short on communication lines
- Intermittent fault caused by moisture or wiring abrasion
