Causes

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame data and full DTC list from all modules
  • Check battery voltage and measure key-on voltage at the fan module power pin
  • Inspect and test associated fuses and fan relays
  • Visually inspect connectors and harness for corrosion, damage, or water intrusion
  • Use a scan tool to attempt to communicate with the Fan 3 module
  • Check CAN/LIN bus continuity and resistance between termination points

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus idle level: CAN High ≈ 2.5 V, CAN Low ≈ 2.5 V (differential ≈ 0 V); dominant state differential ≈ 2.0 V
  • Typical CAN bus bit rates: 250 kb/s or 500 kb/s (verify OEM value)
  • Bus termination resistance: ~60 ohms across CAN H and CAN L (two 120Ω in parallel)
  • Expected fan control message frequency: periodic control messages (varies by OEM, typically 10–100 Hz)
  • Module supply voltage at key ON/run: battery voltage within ~0.5 V
  • Ground resistance: low (near 0 Ω); large resistance indicates poor ground

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record U067C and any other stored codes and freeze frame data from all modules.
  2. Check vehicle battery voltage; verify stable supply (12.4–12.8 V resting, >11 V during cranking depending on vehicle).
  3. Inspect fuses and relays for the fan circuits and module power; replace if suspect.
  4. Visually inspect connector at Fan 3 module and harness to body/engine; disconnect, inspect pins for corrosion or damage, reconnect securely.
  5. Attempt communication with the Fan 3 module using manufacturer scan tool; note if module appears on network or is absent.
  6. Measure power and ground at the module connector with key ON; confirm proper voltages and low ground resistance.
  7. Check CAN bus wiring: measure termination resistance, check for short to battery/ground, verify continuity to other modules on same bus.
  8. Use an oscilloscope to observe CAN High and CAN Low while waking the network; look for valid message frames and absence of excessive noise or stuck dominant states.
  9. If wiring, power and bus are good but module is non-communicative, try a known-good module or bench test the suspect module per OEM procedures.
  10. If module replacement is required, program/configure per manufacturer instructions, clear codes and perform functional test and road/idle test to confirm repair.
