Causes

  • Intermittent or open/short in CANH or CANL wiring between instrument cluster and rest of network
  • Poor connector connection or corrosion at the meter connector or CAN junctions
  • Faulty instrument cluster (meter) internal CAN transceiver
  • Other module pulling down or shorting CAN bus (ECU, BCM, gateway)
  • Missing or incorrect CAN termination (open or bad resistor)
  • Low or unstable battery/ignition voltage or ground problem

Symptoms

  • Instrument cluster gauges inactive or erratic (speedometer, tachometer, fuel)
  • Warning lights or messages on dash (communication error)
  • Loss of odometer/trip data or incorrect instrument indications
  • Other modules reporting CAN communication-related trouble codes
  • Possible loss of features that depend on cluster messages (remote info, alerts)

What to check

  • Scan network and read all U-/C-/B- codes; note which modules are not responding
  • With a scan tool, verify if cluster is online and what CAN signals it should transmit
  • Visual inspection of instrument cluster connector, CAN junctions and associated grounds
  • Measure CAN bus idle voltages (CANH, CANL) and differential with ignition ON
  • Measure resistance between CANH and CANL with ignition OFF (approx. 60 ohms typical)
  • Check battery/ignition voltage and main grounds for proper levels

Signal parameters

  • Vehicle speed (VSS) messages transmitted by instrument cluster
  • Engine RPM and timing data forwarded via CAN
  • Warning lamp statuses and diagnostic lamp commands
  • Fuel level, coolant temperature, and odometer/trip data
  • Cluster supply voltage and ground availability
  • CANH / CANL voltage levels and differential (idle and during activity)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scan tool and record U1128 plus any other network codes. Note which modules are responding and any freeze frame or live data.
  2. Verify battery voltage and main grounds. Low or unstable voltage can disrupt CAN communications.
  3. Perform visual inspection of instrument cluster connector and nearby junctions for corrosion, bent pins, or water intrusion. Repair or clean as needed.
  4. Monitor CAN bus signals with a DMM or oscilloscope. With ignition ON, verify CANH and CANL idle voltages and that differential toggles during communication. Compare to known-good values.
  5. Check for proper termination: measure resistance between CANH and CANL with ignition OFF; expected around 60 ohms (two 120 ohm terminators in parallel).
  6. If wiring appears intact, isolate the instrument cluster by disconnecting it and checking if the rest of the network regains normal communication. This helps identify a module pulling the bus down.
  7. If cluster isolation indicates the cluster is at fault, inspect/repair cluster harness and connector. If connector/wiring good and problem remains, consider replacing or repairing the instrument cluster.
  8. If other module is at fault (gateway/BCM/ECU), diagnose that module per manufacturer procedures; check for software updates or reflashes as recommended.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform a road test or extended key-on monitoring to confirm stable CAN messages and no recurrence of U1128.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at instrument cluster or junction box
  • Open/short on CANH or CANL wiring
  • Failed instrument cluster CAN transceiver
  • Failed gateway/BCM or another module interfering with CAN bus
  • Bad/missing termination resistor
