Causes

  • Broken or chafed wiring between sensor and heater/control module
  • Disconnected, corroded, or water-damaged sensor connector
  • Failed temperature sensor (open thermistor)
  • Poor ground or blown fuse in heater power/logic circuit
  • Failed heater control module or internal input circuitry
  • CAN/communication fault preventing valid temperature value reaching the module

Symptoms

  • Parking heater fails to regulate or does not run as expected
  • Heater fault warning or service message displayed on cluster
  • Reduced or no warm airflow from heater outlet
  • Pre-heating timer or remote start for cabin heating disabled or reports error
  • Logged U114713 in diagnostic scan tool

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame/fault details and any related codes with a capable Volvo scanner
  • Visually inspect heater unit, sensor connector, and wiring harness for damage, corrosion, or water ingress
  • Check related fuses and power/ground circuits for the heater/control module
  • Backprobe sensor connector and measure voltage/resistance with key ON (see signal parameters)
  • Wiggle wiring and connectors while monitoring live data to reproduce the fault
  • Check for lost CAN or module communication codes that could affect temperature reporting

Signal parameters

  • Sensor type: typically an NTC thermistor (negative temp coefficient) — resistance decreases as temperature rises
  • Typical operating temperature span: approx. -40°C to +125°C (sensor dependent)
  • Expected resistance range: depends on sensor design (common values ~2 kΩ–100 kΩ at 25°C); consult OEM spec before replacement
  • Expected voltage at module (via divider): normally ≈0.1–4.8 V across the temperature range; open-circuit often shows >4.9–5.0 V or no change, short shows ≈0.0–0.2 V
  • Communication: module should show valid temperature value on CAN/FH-bus when sensor OK (verify with scanner)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect diagnostic scanner; record U114713 and any related codes and freeze frame data
  2. Perform visual inspection of parking heater, sensor and harness for physical damage, corrosion, or water ingress
  3. Locate the air outlet temperature sensor connector. With ignition ON (do not start the engine or heater if instructed by OEM), backprobe the sensor pins and measure voltage across the sensor wiring — compare to expected range in the service manual
  4. If voltage indicates open/over-voltage, disconnect sensor and measure resistance of sensor itself at ambient temperature; compare to OEM resistance table (if sensor reads infinite/OL, sensor is open)
  5. If sensor resistance is correct, probe harness at module connector for continuity/voltage while moving harness to check for intermittent open — repair broken wires or pins as needed
  6. Check fuses, module power and ground circuits. Repair any faults and re-check
  7. If wiring and sensor are good but module sees no valid signal, check CAN/communication integrity and other modules for related errors
  8. If fault persists after wiring and sensor confirmed good, consider replacing parking heater control module or sending module for testing (follow OEM procedures)
  9. Clear codes and perform operational test of parking heater; verify no reoccurrence and that live temperature values are reported

Likely causes

  • Open or high-resistance wire in sensor harness (broken conductor)
  • Connector pin corrosion or pushed out pins at sensor or module
  • Sensor element failed (open thermistor) from moisture or heat damage
  • Fuse or power supply to heater/control module missing or intermittent
  • Control module input channel failed
