Immobilizer

Causes

  • Failed or intermittent communication on vehicle network (CAN/LIN) between immobilizer and other modules
  • Faulty immobilizer (antitheft) control unit
  • Damaged/poor grounding or power supply to the immobilizer module
  • Faulty key transponder or weak key battery (for keyless systems)
  • Damaged or disconnected immobilizer antenna/coil at the steering column
  • Blown fuse or poor connector at immobilizer/BCM power/ground

Symptoms

  • Engine cranks but does not start or cranks intermittently
  • Starter disabled or starter cut-out after brief crank attempt
  • Immobilizer/warning lamp illuminated or flashing on dash
  • No recognition of key/remote (key not detected) or message like ‘key not recognized’
  • Loss of communication messages on scan tool for immobilizer or other modules

What to check

  • Connect a full-function OEM-level scan tool and read all network and immobilizer codes; note related U/B codes
  • Check battery voltage at 12–14.5 V and inspect battery connections
  • Inspect fuses and relays powering immobilizer, BCM and related circuits
  • Visually inspect wiring and connectors at immobilizer, antenna ring, ignition switch/column and BCM for corrosion, damage or loose pins
  • Attempt to start with spare key (if available) to rule out single-key fault
  • Check for presence of the immobilizer module on the CAN bus with a scan tool (module should respond)

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage: 12.0–14.5 V (system resting/charging)
  • CAN bus idle: CAN_H ≈ CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V (recessive); Dominant: CAN_H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V
  • CAN bus terminator resistance: ~60 ohms total (two 120 ohm resistors in parallel)
  • Immobilizer antenna: coil continuity (not open/short) and detectable pulsed field when key is presented (typical transponder LF ~125 kHz)
  • Module ground resistance: low milliohm-level to chassis (no open/high resistance)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect OEM or capable scan tool, record U1600 and any related U/B/B codes; note freeze frame/conditions.
  2. Verify customer history: recent battery change, module replacement, collisions or failed jumps/charging incidents.
  3. Check battery, main fuses and relays for immobilizer/BCM power; repair any blown fuses or poor power/ground.
  4. Check for spare key recognition: attempt start with known-good/spare key. If spare works, suspect key transponder or key battery.
  5. Inspect and back-probe immobilizer module connectors and antenna ring wiring for corrosion, pins pushed out or damage.
  6. Verify CAN bus health: measure CAN_H/CAN_L voltages, check for correct terminator resistance and for noise or grounding faults; repair wiring faults.
  7. Test antenna coil: verify continuity and presence of LF pulses with oscilloscope or dedicated tester while presenting key; replace antenna if no signal.
  8. If module does not appear on network or fails self-test, check module power/ground and replace module only after verifying wiring and network integrity.
  9. If hardware OK, perform key/immobilizer re-learn or reprogram with manufacturer tool following workshop procedures; clear codes and retest.
  10. If issue persists after hardware checks and reprogramming, consult manufacturer service information for specific module software updates or known bulletins and consider module replacement by qualified technician.

Likely causes

  • Damaged CAN bus wiring or short to power/ground near immobilizer module
  • Bad immobilizer antenna (no transponder read) or broken antenna cable
  • Dead/weak battery in remote/key preventing transponder or keyless start detection
  • Corroded connector or poor ground at immobilizer/BCM
  • Recent module replacement or ECU programming error requiring key re-learn

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Immobilizer fault / communication error detected — immobilizer not recognized or communication with immobilizer module interrupted.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5–2.0 hours
