Causes

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and all stored DTCs from all modules with a capable scan tool
  • Check vehicle battery voltage and charging system (resting and cranking voltages)
  • Visually inspect CCP connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, water damage or chafe
  • Check for aftermarket devices spliced into communication or power circuits
  • Perform wiggle test of harness while monitoring bus traffic and scan tool connectivity
  • Measure CAN/LIN bus voltages and termination resistance

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus idle (recessive) voltages: roughly 2.5 V on CAN_H and CAN_L referenced to ground; dominant state shows CAN_H ~3.5 V and CAN_L ~1.5 V (differential ~2 V)
  • LIN bus idle is typically near battery voltage with wake-pulse signatures; single-wire levels vary with vehicle architecture
  • Typical CAN baud rates used on vehicles: 125 kbps, 250 kbps, or 500 kbps (verify vehicle-specific rate)
  • Termination: two 120 Ω resistors in parallel (effective ~60 Ω) across CAN_H and CAN_L at network ends

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanner and record U1965 plus any other communication codes from all modules; note freeze-frame data.
  2. Verify battery resting voltage (>12.4 V) and charging system (alternator output) to rule out undervoltage resets.
  3. Inspect CCP connector and wiring visually and physically for damage, corrosion, bent pins or water ingress; repair as needed.
  4. Check for related modules showing communication loss — isolate whether the problem is local to CCP or affects entire bus.
  5. Measure CAN/LIN bus voltages with a meter: check idle voltages and look for stuck-high/low conditions. Measure termination resistance across CAN_H and CAN_L (approx. 60 Ω).
  6. Use an oscilloscope or CAN/LIN bus analyzer to view traffic and error frames; look for noise, dominant stuck lines, or missing ACKs.
  7. Perform a wiggle test of the harness and connectors while monitoring bus traffic and scan-tool communication to reproduce error.
  8. If another module is suspected, disconnect non-essential modules one at a time (per service info) to identify offending device.
  9. If wiring and other modules are good, reflash or update CCP software per manufacturer bulletin, then recheck.
  10. Replace the CCP only after verifying wiring, grounds, termination and software; program/configure new module per OEM procedure and clear codes, then retest.
