Causes

What to check

  • Connect a dealer-level or capable OBD2 scan tool and read stored and pending codes from all network modules (ABS, BCM, engine, gateway)
  • Confirm whether ABS/TC module is detected by the scanner and whether it reports internal faults
  • Visually inspect ABS module connector, wiring harness at module and along routing for damage, corrosion or water entry
  • Check ABS module power and ground pins for battery voltage (ignition ON) and a good ground (low resistance to chassis)
  • Check fuses and relays for ABS and CAN power circuits
  • Measure resistance between CANH and CANL with ignition OFF — expected ~60 Ω (two 120 Ω terminators in parallel)

Signal parameters

  • Idle voltages (key ON, bus idle): CANH ≈ 2.5 V, CANL ≈ 2.5 V
  • Dominant state voltages during traffic: CANH ≈ 3.5 V, CANL ≈ 1.5 V (differential ≈ 2.0 V)
  • Termination resistance end-to-end (whole bus): ≈ 60 Ω (two 120 Ω terminators in parallel)
  • Typical bus baud rates (depends on network): commonly 500 kbps or 250 kbps (verify vehicle-specific)
  • Supply voltage for module power: vehicle battery nominal 12 V (should be stable 11–15 V during checks)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect scan tool and record all active and historic network-related DTCs from ABS, BCM, engine and gateway modules. Note whether the ABS module responds to the tool.
  2. Verify vehicle battery state and charging system. Low or unstable voltage can cause communication drops. Recharge/replace battery if necessary.
  3. Inspect ABS module connector and visible CAN harness for damage or corrosion. Repair any damaged insulation, pins or connectors.
  4. Check ABS module supply and ground circuits: verify battery voltage at power pin(s) with ignition ON and low resistance to chassis ground at ground pin(s). Repair poor power/ground connections.
  5. Verify fuses/relays for ABS and gateway — replace if blown and retest.
  6. With ignition OFF, measure resistance between CANH and CANL at a convenient connector; expect ~60 Ω. If open or very high resistance, suspect missing termination or open circuit.
  7. With ignition ON and engine OFF, measure DC voltages on CANH and CANL at the ABS connector: both ≈2.5 V. If one or both rails are incorrect, trace wiring for short to Vb or ground.
  8. Check for shorts: measure resistance from CANH/CANL to battery positive and ground with ignition OFF. Identify and repair any short circuits.
  9. If physical checks normal, monitor the CAN bus with an oscilloscope or a CAN monitor tool to view frames, noise, or bus-off conditions. Look for message flooding, missing ABS addresses, or corrupted signals.
  10. Isolate the fault by disconnecting neighboring modules or aftermarket devices one at a time and observing if ABS communication returns.
  11. If wiring and bus integrity are confirmed and the module still doesn’t communicate, consider ABS module reprogramming or replacement per manufacturer procedures. After repairs, clear codes and perform a road test to confirm communication stability.
