Causes

  • TPMS module powered down (blown fuse, open circuit, disconnected connector)
  • Broken or shorted CAN high/low wiring between TPMS and gateway/module
  • Corroded or loose ground or power connection at TPMS module
  • Faulty TPMS module (internal failure)
  • Gateway / BCM / instrument cluster software/configuration error or failure
  • Module on different CAN bus or wrong module coding

Symptoms

  • TPMS warning lamp or message on dash
  • No individual tyre pressure readings available in instrument cluster or infotainment
  • Related driver assistance features that rely on TPMS may be disabled
  • Possible additional U-codes for CAN communication or missing modules
  • Intermittent or permanent loss of TPMS data

What to check

  • Scan vehicle with manufacturer-capable tool to confirm U2149 and view live data / module list
  • Verify TPMS warning lamp/message and any other network-related DTCs
  • Inspect fuse(s) for TPMS/receiver and replace if blown
  • Visually inspect TPMS module connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, or disconnection
  • Check main ground points and battery voltage under load
  • Check that the TPMS module appears on the expected CAN network using a scan tool

Signal parameters

  • CAN network: two-wire CAN High (CANH) and CAN Low (CANL) differential bus; normal idle voltages ~2.5 V each (watch for expected differential waveform)
  • TPMS CAN message: manufacturer-specific message ID(s) and data length (DLC); typical refresh rate from TPMS module once per second to several seconds depending on vehicle state
  • TPMS RF: sensors transmit on 315 MHz or 433 MHz (region dependent) including sensor ID, pressure, temperature and battery status
  • TPMS module supply: typical 9–16 V depending on vehicle nominal system (check vehicle spec) and ground continuity
  • CAN bus termination: ~60 ohm measured between CANH and CANL at the two ends of the network

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable diagnostic scan tool and confirm U2149 and any related U- or B-codes. Note whether TPMS module appears in module list.
  2. Check fuses for TPMS/receiver and replace if faulty. Re-scan to see if code clears or module reappears.
  3. With ignition off, inspect TPMS module connector(s) for corrosion, bent pins, or loose locks; repair or reseat connector and re-test.
  4. Verify battery voltage at vehicle and at TPMS module power pin with ignition on. Confirm good ground(s) at module.
  5. If module still not communicating, use an oscilloscope or CAN bus tester at the module connector to observe CANH/CANL activity with ignition on and while accessing network with scan tool. Look for valid differential frames and expected message IDs.
  6. Check termination resistors across CANH/CANL. Repair short/open in wiring or damaged terminations as needed.
  7. Trace and repair any damaged wiring harness sections, splices or broken wires between TPMS module and gateway/BCM.
  8. If wiring and power/grounds are good but no CAN messages from TPMS module, consider replacing TPMS module. After replacement, program/configure the new module and re-initialize TPMS system per manufacturer procedure.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform road test or relearn procedure to confirm TPMS data is restored and no reoccurrence of U2149.

Likely causes

  • Blown fuse or lost power/ground to TPMS module
  • Disconnected or corroded connector at TPMS module
  • CAN wiring open/short or poor splice affecting TPMS CAN node
  • Faulty TPMS module or gateway not forwarding messages
  • Incorrect module coding or lost network configuration after service

Fault status

⚠️ Status
