Causes

  • AHS control module failure
  • Open/short or high resistance in CANH/CANL wiring between AHS and bus
  • Poor power supply or ground to the AHS module (blown fuse, corroded connector)
  • Missing or incorrect CAN termination (open/shorted/incorrect resistor)
  • Module asleep or not woken by gateway/other module (software/ECU state)
  • Intermittent connector or harness damage (corrosion, water ingress, broken pins)

Symptoms

  • Add‑on heater (AHS) inoperative or not controllable
  • Driver message or MIL related to auxiliary heater or network fault
  • No response from AHS in scan tool / module not listed on bus
  • Other modules indicating CAN network errors or reduced functionality
  • Intermittent operation of heater or loss of heating at key cycles

What to check

  • Use a scan tool to read U2174 and any related codes; check if AHS appears in module list
  • Attempt to communicate with AHS using diagnostic tool — note timeout or no response
  • Visually inspect AHS connector and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, water ingress, chafing or heat damage
  • Check fuses and relays feeding AHS for correct presence and continuity
  • Measure AHS supply voltage (key ON) and ground continuity at the module connector
  • Measure CANH and CANL voltages at the AHS connector with key ON and engine off

Signal parameters

  • AHS supply voltage: typically ~11–14 V with key ON
  • Ground resistance: low continuity,
  • CAN line idle voltages (recessive): CANH ≈ 2.5 V, CANL ≈ 2.5 V measured to ground
  • CAN dominant levels during activity: CANH ≈ 3.5 V, CANL ≈ 1.5 V (differential pulses visible with scope)
  • Termination resistance: approx. 60 Ω measured across CANH/CANL with ignition off (two 120 Ω resistors in parallel)
  • Expected bus data rate: vehicle-specific (commonly 250 kbps or 500 kbps) — verify from OEM data

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all fault codes from all modules; note freeze frame and occurrence conditions.
  2. Attempt communication with the AHS module using a compatible diagnostic tool; confirm module absence or response timeouts.
  3. Visually inspect AHS connector and harness for damage, corrosion or moisture; repair as needed.
  4. Check fuses/relays for the AHS power supply; verify battery voltage at the module connector (11–14 V) and a good ground.
  5. With ignition ON, measure CANH and CANL at the AHS connector: verify idle voltages (~2.5 V) and observable differential activity when network bus is active.
  6. Measure termination resistance across CANH/CANL (engine off). If open or out of range, trace/replace missing or faulty terminator.
  7. If no bus activity at module, backprobe and follow harness toward gateway: check for continuity, short to ground/power, and inspect splice points. Perform wiggle test to reproduce intermittent faults.
  8. Isolate the AHS by disconnecting it and verifying whether the rest of the CAN network recovers; if isolating AHS restores network, suspect module short/fault.
  9. If wiring and supply are good but no communication, attempt module reset/power cycle and re-scan. Check for available software updates or reprogramming notes from OEM.
  10. If module is confirmed dead or non‑responsive after all checks, replace AHS module and reconfigure/encode per manufacturer instructions. Clear codes and verify repair by confirming communication and proper heater operation.

Likely causes

  • Blown AHS power or ignition fuse
  • Damaged or disconnected AHS connector pins
  • Broken or shorted CANH/CANL pair near the AHS module
  • Failed AHS module (no power-up despite supply present)
  • Faulty termination resistor or bus short to battery/ground
