Control Module Communication Fault

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Open or shorted CAN/communication wiring (CAN High/Low, LIN, MOST, FlexRay depending on vehicle)
  • Poor power supply or ground to the affected module
  • Corroded or loose connectors or pins
  • Failed or misconfigured control module (software/firmware fault)
  • Bus termination resistor faulty or multiple devices driving the bus
  • Aftermarket accessories or recent repairs altering wiring or module addresses

Symptoms

  • Warning lamps illuminated (Master warning, ECU/ABS/airbag/comms lamp depending on network)
  • Loss of function for systems controlled by the affected module (e.g., instrument cluster, ABS, airbag, climate)
  • Intermittent or permanent diagnostic trouble codes related to multiple modules
  • No response from the module when scanned or module shows NA/— in network module list
  • Vehicle may enter limp mode or display errors on dash

What to check

  • Record freeze frame and full DTC list with a capable diagnostic scanner and note module address reported as U2509
  • Check battery voltage (should be >12.4V stable) and charging system health
  • Visually inspect connectors at the implicated module(s) for corrosion, bent pins, water ingress or poor locking
  • Check fuses and power feed to the affected module
  • Perform a key-on engine-off scan to confirm if module is present on the bus
  • Inspect wiring harness for chafing, recent repairs, or aftermarket taps

Signal parameters

  • CAN High ~2.5 V idle, swings between ~1.5–3.5 V during traffic; CAN Low ~2.5 V idle, swings inverse (~3.5–1.5 V)
  • Differential CAN bus voltage with traffic typically 1.5–2.5 V
  • Bus termination resistance between CAN_H and CAN_L approximately 60 Ω (two 120 Ω in parallel)
  • Module supply voltage: battery voltage when key on (~12–14 V)
  • Ground continuity to chassis
  • LIN bus nominal idle ~12 V (or wake state depending on layout) — consult vehicle data for exact values

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Step 1 — Gather information: read all DTCs from all modules, note time/date/conditions, check for related codes (other U-codes)
  2. Step 2 — Verify electrical supply: measure battery voltage and check power/ground at the affected module connectors; repair any low voltage or poor grounds
  3. Step 3 — Visual inspection: disconnect battery (if required by procedure), inspect connectors and harness for damage, corrosion or rodent chewing; repair as needed
  4. Step 4 — Check fuses/relays: verify power and accessory feeds to the module are intact
  5. Step 5 — Check bus presence: with key on, use a scan tool to see if the module is listed on the network. If not present, measure CAN_H and CAN_L at the module connector for idle and active voltages
  6. Step 6 — Bus integrity test: measure CAN differential resistance across the bus (expect ≈60 Ω). Use oscilloscope to view bus signals while driving or while exercising modules to identify noise, reflections or a dominant device
  7. Step 7 — Isolate the fault: if multiple modules present, disconnect suspect modules one at a time (or isolate branches) to see if bus communication restores; check for shorted device pulling the bus down
  8. Step 8 — Repair wiring/connectors: repair or replace damaged sections or corroded connectors, ensure good terminal seating and proper sealing
  9. Step 9 — Software checks: check for available software updates or reprogramming notes for the module; perform module reset/re-flash only after confirming wiring and power are good
  10. Step 10 — Replace module only if tests confirm internal failure; re-scan and verify full network functionality and clear codes. Document and retain old module if required by manufacturer
  11. Safety note: follow manufacturer procedures for airbag/SRS, high-voltage, and battery disconnection; consult technical service bulletins for model-specific guidance

Likely causes

  • Damaged connector or damaged CAN wiring between modules
  • Poor ground or low battery voltage causing module to drop off bus
  • Faulty control module firmware or internal failure
  • Bus termination resistor open or shorted
