Causes

  • Software/version mismatch between control modules (incompatible firmware or calibration).
  • Corrupted CAN messages due to wiring damage, poor connector contact, corrosion or shielding failure.
  • Failed CAN transceiver or internal module fault sending malformed frames.
  • Incorrect module coding/configuration after replacement or software update.
  • Improper network termination or wrong termination resistor value.
  • Intermittent battery/ground issues causing voltage fluctuations or brownouts.

Symptoms

  • Warning lamps or message on dash (communications or ECU fault).
  • Loss or intermittent loss of function for systems on the affected CAN network (e.g., instrument cluster, ABS, ABS sensors, climate, gateway modules).
  • Multiple communication-related DTCs present across modules.
  • Modules show incorrect or garbled live-data values.
  • Modules unable to be reprogrammed or communicate reliably with OEM scan tool.

What to check

  • Use a full-function OEM scan tool to read U2511 plus all stored/related communication DTCs and freeze-frame data from all modules.
  • Compare software/part numbers and calibration identifiers of related modules for mismatches.
  • Visually inspect CAN wiring harnesses, connectors and ground points for corrosion, looseness, damage or aftermarket splices.
  • Measure CAN bus idle voltages (CAN_H and CAN_L) and termination resistance between CAN_H and CAN_L with key on, engine off.
  • Use an oscilloscope to capture CAN_H and CAN_L waveforms to look for bit errors, missing termination, reflections or noise.
  • Check vehicle battery voltage and main grounds while performing communication tests.

Signal parameters

  • Typical idle voltages: CAN_H ≈ 2.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 2.5 V (each ~2.5 V with respect to chassis at recessive state).
  • Dominant state voltages: CAN_H ≈ 3.5 V, CAN_L ≈ 1.5 V (differential ≈ 2.0 V) during transmission.
  • Termination resistance: approx. 60 Ω between CAN_H and CAN_L (two 120 Ω terminators in parallel).
  • Common CAN network speeds on Land Rover: 500 kbps (powertrain) or 250 kbps (body), verify exact network speed for the affected bus.
  • Expected message parameters: correct message ID, payload length and scaling/units per OEM documentation; CRC or checksum present on some message types.

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect OEM-quality scan tool; retrieve U2511 and all communication-related DTCs from every module and save freeze-frame/logs.
  2. Note module software/part numbers and programming dates. If modules were recently replaced or reprogrammed, suspect software/ID mismatch.
  3. Perform quick visual wiring and connector inspection on the CAN network related to the failing modules (look for damaged insulation, water ingress, aftermarket wiring).
  4. With ignition on, measure termination resistance between CAN_H and CAN_L at a convenient harness connector; expect ~60 Ω. Replace missing/incorrect terminators as needed.
  5. Measure DC voltages at CAN_H and CAN_L and compare to expected idle voltages. Check battery voltage and main ground integrity concurrently.
  6. Use an oscilloscope to capture CAN waveforms while exercising the affected system (crank, operate components) to identify corrupted frames, excessive noise, reflections or missing messages.
  7. If waveform shows severe bus faults, isolate sections of the network by disconnecting modules one at a time to find the device causing malformed frames.
  8. If a single module is identified, verify its configuration and reflash/update software to the correct calibration. If flashing fails or issues persist, suspect module hardware (replace or repair).
  9. Repair any wiring or connector faults, restore correct termination, then clear codes and perform a full system test/road test to confirm the issue is resolved.
  10. If intermittent or unresolved, consult manufacturer technical service bulletins (TSBs) and consider module bench testing or replacement with correct programmed unit.

Likely causes

  • Module software/version mismatch after update or module replacement.
  • Wiring or connector fault on the affected CAN branch causing bit errors.
  • Failed CAN transceiver in the sending or receiving module.
  • Missing or incorrect CAN termination (resistor open/short).
  • Intermittent power or ground to one or more modules.

Fault status

⚠️ Status
CAN data incompatibility: received CAN message(s) did not match expected content/format (CRC, length, scaling or ID). Communication integrity fault—may require wiring, module configuration, or software correction.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.5-3.0 hours
