Message missing from the dashboard

Causes

  • Faulty or intermittent CAN (or other in-vehicle network) wiring, connectors, or terminations
  • Failed sending module (ECU) or instrument cluster
  • Module awake/asleep state or software misconfiguration
  • Faulty power/ground or blown fuse for sender or instrument cluster
  • Network bus off, high error rate or faulty transceiver
  • Incorrect or corrupt module software/calibration

Symptoms

  • Missing dashboard message, icon, or text that should be shown (e.g., gear, warning, or system status messages)
  • Partial or intermittent instrument cluster information
  • Related warning lights may be absent or not synchronized with other modules
  • Other modules reporting communication-related DTCs
  • Possible CAN bus-related symptoms (slow UI, intermittent features)

What to check

  • Scan all modules and record U2520 plus any other communication DTCs and freeze frame data
  • Verify instrument cluster and suspected sender ECU are present and awake in the scan tool
  • Check battery voltage, fuses, relays and module supply/ground integrity
  • Visually inspect wiring and connectors on CAN bus nodes and harness for damage or corrosion
  • Use a CAN bus monitor/oscilloscope to look for the expected message ID and bus health (CANH/CANL waveforms)
  • Measure termination resistance across CANH and CANL (~60 ohm total) with power off

Signal parameters

  • CAN High / CAN Low nominal voltages: idle ~2.5 V each, differential ~2.5 V ±
  • Typical CAN bus speed: 125 kbps, 250 kbps or 500 kbps (verify vehicle-specific rate)
  • Expected message ID(s) / PGN from sending ECU (consult manufacturer message list)
  • Message frequency (Hz) or periodicity for the missing message
  • CAN error counters (RX/TX error counts) and bus-off status reported by modules

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record all DTCs from instrument cluster and other control modules; note freeze frame/time stamps.
  2. Confirm whether the expected message is present on the bus using a diagnostic tool or CAN sniffer. Identify message ID and frequency.
  3. If message is present but instrument cluster not responding, suspect cluster receiver/transceiver or software. If message absent, trace back to sending ECU.
  4. Verify power and ground at both instrument cluster and sending ECU; check relevant fuses and relays.
  5. Inspect wiring harness and connectors between modules; repair any corrosion, damage, or poor pin contacts.
  6. Measure CANH/CANL waveforms with oscilloscope while recreating condition; look for noise, stuck dominant/recessive, reflections or missing frames.
  7. Check termination resistor value with ignition off; repair if incorrect.
  8. If a module was recently replaced or updated, verify proper programming/coding and perform required module initialization.
  9. If transceiver or module suspected faulty, swap with known-good unit if available or replace and re-test.
  10. Clear DTCs, cycle ignition, and perform road/usage test to confirm the message is received and no recurrence.

Likely causes

  • Broken / corroded connector or chafed CAN high/low wires between the sending ECU and instrument cluster
  • Faulty instrument cluster CAN transceiver or internal failure
  • Sending module not powered or fused incorrectly (blown fuse, relay fault)
  • ECU in sleep/hibernation or not configured to send the expected message after replacement or software update
  • Bus termination missing or wrong resistance causing reflections and frame loss
  • Software/firmware mismatch between modules

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Communication message expected by the instrument cluster was not received on the vehicle network. Check network integrity, module power, and sender/receiver modules.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.5-3.0 hours
