Unsupported Network Message Received

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Aftermarket device or scan tool injecting unsupported messages onto the network
  • New or replacement module with incompatible software, calibration, or configuration
  • Corrupted or malformed CAN/FlexRay/LIN message due to wiring faults or noise
  • Faulty gateway or module interpreting messages from another bus incorrectly
  • Incorrect network termination or bus voltage issues causing bit errors
  • Intermittent connector or wiring faults causing corrupted frames

Symptoms

  • MIL/Warning lights related to one or more modules
  • Loss or intermittent loss of the function controlled by the receiving module
  • Erratic or unexpected instrument cluster messages
  • Modules going into limp or failsafe mode
  • One or more communication-related DTCs present in addition to U3263

What to check

  • Retrieve all current and historical DTCs from all modules and note timestamps
  • Ask about recent module replacements, software updates, or aftermarket installs
  • Use a capable scan tool to view live network messages and module presence
  • Check battery voltage and charging system for proper voltage during tests
  • Visually inspect connectors and wiring on modules and gateway for damage or corrosion
  • Disconnect suspected aftermarket devices or recent additions and re-scan

Signal parameters

  • Message ID (CAN arbitration ID) and whether it matches expected IDs for the bus
  • Data Length Code (DLC) and payload bytes — look for unexpected sizes
  • Message frequency (Hz) and whether frequency deviates from specification
  • CAN_H / CAN_L idle voltages (~2.5 V each, differential ~0 V idle)
  • Dominant/recessive transitions and bit timing (use oscilloscope for edge quality)
  • Bus error counters, bus-off events and node error states reported by modules

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record symptoms and retrieve all module DTCs and freeze-frame data. Note other U-codes or network errors.
  2. Confirm there were no recent software flashes, module swaps, or aftermarket installations. Remove aftermarket items and retest.
  3. With a scan tool that can monitor network traffic, capture messages while reproducing the symptom. Identify the message ID flagged as unsupported and note transmitting module (if any).
  4. Use an oscilloscope or CAN bus analyzer to inspect signal integrity (CAN_H/CAN_L waveforms, bit timing, error frames). Look for noise, missing recessive/dominant levels, or reflections indicating termination issues.
  5. Check physical layer: verify termination resistor(s), harness continuity, connector seating, water intrusion, and corrosion at gateway and participating modules.
  6. If a specific module is transmitting an unexpected message, check that module’s software/calibration part number against manufacturer data; reflash/update to correct software if required.
  7. Isolate the fault by disconnecting suspected modules or segments (one at a time) to see if the U3263 clears. Reconnect and observe behavior.
  8. If a gateway translates messages between buses, verify gateway configuration and software; inspect for incorrect routing or message remapping.
  9. Clear codes and perform extended road or bench test to see if DTC returns. Document conditions needed to recreate the fault.
  10. If hardware fault suspected and all else normal, replace the suspected module or harness section per manufacturer procedures and retest.
  11. Safety note: when disconnecting modules or replacing control units, follow manufacturer procedure to avoid unintended system behavior (airbags, ABS, etc.).

Likely causes

  • Incompatible or incorrectly configured replacement control module
  • Aftermarket accessory or service tool injecting unexpected messages
  • Faulty gateway/module firmware mismatch between networks
  • Intermittent wiring/connector fault producing corrupted frames
