U0052
Vehicle Communication Bus C (-) Low
Causes
- Short to ground on the Bus C CANL wiring
- Failed or internally shorted control module pulling CANL low
- Damaged wiring, chafing, or connector corrosion allowing a low-voltage path
- Missing or incorrect termination resistance (open or shorted terminator)
- Water intrusion or contamination in connectors
- Low battery or poor battery/ground connections causing abnormal bus levels
Symptoms
- Multiple modules on Bus C fail to communicate or intermittently communicate
- Illumination of MIL or communication-related dash warnings
- Loss of functions controlled by modules on Bus C (e.g., body, networked sensors)
- Possible drivability or start issues if critical modules are affected
What to check
- Verify battery voltage and main ground connections are good before diagnosing the bus
- Use a scan tool to read all module communication faults and freeze-frame data
- Visually inspect wiring harnesses, connectors and modules on Bus C for damage or corrosion
- Measure DC voltage of CANL relative to chassis ground with ignition ON/engine OFF
- Measure differential resistance between CANH and CANL (termination) with battery disconnected — expected ~60 ohms between bus lines at end-to-end
- Use an oscilloscope to view CANH and CANL waveforms while attempting communication
Signal parameters
- Recessive (idle) voltage: CANH and CANL both near ~2.5 V
- Dominant state: CANH typically ~3.5 V, CANL typically ~1.5 V
- Bus stuck low: CANL measured
- Termination resistance (end-to-end across CANH–CANL): approx. 60 ± 5 ohms (two 120 Ω terminators in parallel)
- Expected differential voltage during dominant bit: ~2.0 V
Diagnostic algorithm
- Record stored codes and freeze-frame; note which modules report on Bus C.
- Ensure vehicle battery is fully charged and main grounds are clean and tight.
- Perform a thorough visual inspection of Bus C wiring, connectors, and modules for damage, water ingress, or corrosion.
- With ignition ON (engine OFF), measure CANL voltage at a known good module connector and compare to chassis ground. If CANL is abnormally low (< ~1.0 V) proceed to isolate.
- Measure resistance between CANH and CANL with battery disconnected. Confirm ~60 Ω. If open or shorted, trace wiring and check terminator connectors.
- Use an oscilloscope across CANH–CANL while commanding communication (or cranking key) to observe waveform. Look for flatline, clipped, or noisy signals and identify which node is pulling low.
- Isolate sections by disconnecting modules one at a time (or disconnect splice packs) while monitoring CANL voltage to find when the line returns to normal — the module removed before the fault clears is suspect.
- If a module is suspected, inspect its connector and wiring for shorts to ground. If wiring checks fail, consider swapping or bench-testing the module per manufacturer procedure.
- Repair or replace damaged wiring, connectors, terminators, or faulty module as indicated. Reassemble and clear codes, then road test and re-scan to verify the fault does not return.
Likely causes
- CANL conductor shorted to chassis ground at a connector or damaged harness section
- One module on Bus C has failed and is holding CANL near ground
- Open/missing terminator or incorrect resistance at bus ends
- Corroded or loose connectors at module(s) or splice pack
