A/c switch
Causes
- Faulty A/C switch (request or clutch switch) or internal failure
- Open or short in A/C switch wiring harness
- Corroded or loose connector at the switch or module
- Blown fuse or faulty A/C relay affecting the switch circuit
- Faulty ECM/BCM input or ground circuit
- Aftermarket equipment or recent repairs that disturbed wiring
Symptoms
- A/C compressor/clutch does not engage or operates intermittently
- Reduced or no cabin cooling
- A/C indicator light may not illuminate or behaves erratically
- Possible illumination of MIL or A/C-related warning
- Unusual behavior after starting or when switching A/C on/off
What to check
- Retrieve freeze frame and live data with a scan tool; note when code set and A/C request state
- Visually inspect A/C switch, connector and wiring for damage, corrosion or loose pins
- Check fuses and A/C relay in power distribution centers related to the A/C circuit
- Backprobe switch connector to measure reference voltage, switched output and ground
- Perform continuity and resistance checks on wiring between switch and module
- Wiggle test wiring while observing scan tool data for intermittent failures
Signal parameters
- Typical A/C switch is an on/off (binary) signal: closed = battery voltage (~10–14 V) to module or ground depending on design; open = ~0 V or open circuit
- Switch continuity: closed ~0–5 ohms; open = infinite ohms
- Reference supply (if present) normally ~5 V or battery voltage — check manufacturer wiring diagram
- No-load current of switch is very low; short to ground or to battery will alter expected voltage
Diagnostic algorithm
- Confirm code and conditions: read DTCs and live data, note whether code is current, pending or historical.
- Verify basic items: check A/C fuse(s) and relay, inspect connectors at switch and module for corrosion or damage.
- Reproduce the fault: operate A/C while watching the scan tool for the A/C request signal and any dropouts.
- Backprobe the switch connector: with ignition ON, measure reference, output and ground. Compare to expected values.
- Check continuity between the switch and the controlling module connector; repair any open/shorted wires.
- If wiring and connectors are good, substitute a known-good switch or bench-test the suspect switch per service data.
- If after replacing switch and repairing wiring the fault remains, test/replace the controlling module or inspect for internal faults per factory procedures.
- Clear codes and road-test to verify repair. Monitor for reoccurrence over multiple cycles.

Signal parameters
- Typical A/C switch is an on/off (binary) signal: closed = battery voltage (~10–14 V) to module or ground depending on design; open = ~0 V or open circuit
- Switch continuity: closed ~0–5 ohms; open = infinite ohms
- Reference supply (if present) normally ~5 V or battery voltage — check manufacturer wiring diagram
- No-load current of switch is very low; short to ground or to battery will alter expected voltage
Diagnostic algorithm
- Confirm code and conditions: read DTCs and live data, note whether code is current, pending or historical.
- Verify basic items: check A/C fuse(s) and relay, inspect connectors at switch and module for corrosion or damage.
- Reproduce the fault: operate A/C while watching the scan tool for the A/C request signal and any dropouts.
- Backprobe the switch connector: with ignition ON, measure reference, output and ground. Compare to expected values.
- Check continuity between the switch and the controlling module connector; repair any open/shorted wires.
- If wiring and connectors are good, substitute a known-good switch or bench-test the suspect switch per service data.
- If after replacing switch and repairing wiring the fault remains, test/replace the controlling module or inspect for internal faults per factory procedures.
- Clear codes and road-test to verify repair. Monitor for reoccurrence over multiple cycles.
Likely causes
- Connector pins pushed back, corroded or contaminated
- Broken wire at a harness flex point (near dash, firewall or compressor)
- A/C switch has failed mechanically/electrically
- Relay or fuse related to A/C control is defective
- Intermittent ground or reference voltage to the switch
