What to check

  • Visually inspect connectors and wiring harnesses at HVAC control module, instrument cluster, and audio head unit for corrosion, damage, or loose terminals.
  • Check module presence and CAN messages using a scan tool: confirm each multimedia module is listed and responding to requests.
  • Measure CAN bus idle voltages at a convenient connector: CAN_H and CAN_L should be approximately mid-rail (~2.4–2.7 V).
  • Measure resistance between CAN_H and CAN_L with ignition off — approximately 60 ohms (two 120Ω terminators in parallel) or as specified by manufacturer.

Diagnostic algorithm

  9. If a specific module is identified as causing errors, try disconnecting it and retest communication. If disconnection restores bus communication, replace or repair that module.
  10. If wiring and modules appear OK, check for available software updates or reflash the affected modules per factory procedure.
  11. After repairs, clear codes and perform a full system test to confirm the timeout no longer occurs under normal operating conditions.
