Page language: EN

Causes

  • Incomplete or failed radar calibration routine
  • Contaminated or obstructed radar sensor lens
  • Mechanical misalignment or improper mounting of radar sensor
  • Corroded, loose or damaged wiring/connectors between radar and control module
  • Software bug or corrupted calibration data in control module
  • Faulty radar sensor or radar control module

Symptoms

  • Driver assistance warning message related to radar or Autopilot
  • Adaptive cruise control or collision mitigation unavailable or degraded
  • Radar reports invalid or out-of-calibration status in service logs
  • False/phantom object detections or missed detections
  • Calibration routine fails to complete or repeatedly requests recalibration

What to check

  • Retrieve OEM fault codes and event log with Tesla service tool; note timestamps and related faults
  • Confirm vehicle software level and recent updates or re-flashes
  • Visually inspect radar sensor area for contamination, damage or foreign objects
  • Inspect sensor mounting points for damage, correct torque and alignment marks
  • Check wiring harness and connector pins for corrosion, bent pins, water ingress or loose terminals
  • Verify last calibration timestamp and who/where it was performed

Signal parameters

  • Radar module status (calibration state)
  • Radar raw/processed target count and ranges
  • Last calibration timestamp and technician ID
  • Module communication status on vehicle network (CAN/CAN-FD)
  • Steering angle, vehicle speed and yaw rate during dynamic calibration
  • IMU/gyroscope alignment and offsets

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Pull the complete fault log and freeze-frame data with OEM diagnostic tool; note linked faults and exact messages.
  2. Confirm vehicle software/build version and check for technical service bulletins related to radar calibration.
  3. Visually inspect radar sensor and surrounding area: clean lens, check for impact damage, and confirm mount is secure and aligned to factory marks.
  4. Inspect wiring harness and connectors for corrosion, water ingress, loose pins or chafing; repair or replace as needed.
  5. Verify related sensor health (IMU, cameras, wheel speed) and ensure no other sensor faults could prevent calibration.
  6. Attempt a factory-recommended static or dynamic radar calibration following the manufacturer procedure; record any error codes/messages during the attempt.
  7. If calibration fails, swap with a known-good radar module (if available and per safety/service rules) or replace sensor/module when bench testing confirms module fault.
  8. After repair/calibration, clear fault codes, perform a confirmation drive and recheck logs to ensure calibration status is retained.
  9. If intermittent or software-related, reflash or update module software per dealer procedures and repeat calibration.

Likely causes

  • Calibration data corrupted after software update
  • Physical impact or body repair altered sensor position
  • Connector corrosion causing intermittent data during calibration
  • Sensor returned out of factory tolerance (hardware fault)
  • Incorrect or incomplete calibration procedure performed

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Radar calibration data invalid or calibration failed. Radar-based driver assistance features may be limited until calibration and any required repairs are completed.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.5 - 4.0 hours
