Causes

  • Faulty right-side airbag (squib) or inflator
  • Poor/dirty/corroded electrical connection at the right-side airbag or SRS module
  • Open, short to ground, or short to battery in the right-side airbag wiring circuit
  • Faulty right-side airbag deployment control module or SRS control module
  • Intermittent or lost communication on the airbag data bus
  • Water intrusion or physical damage to wiring or connector

Symptoms

  • SRS/Airbag warning light illuminated on instrument cluster
  • Possible additional SRS-related warnings (e.g., airbag unavailable)
  • Right-side airbag will not deploy in a crash until repaired
  • Possible loss of other passenger restraint features linked to the SRS module

What to check

  • Scan SRS module with an appropriate OEM-level or capable scanner; read stored codes, freeze frame and pending counts
  • Verify SRS warning lamp behavior: on with ignition ON, self-test extinguishes then reappears if fault present
  • Visually inspect right-side airbag connectors (seat, door, pillar) and wiring for damage, corrosion, or water intrusion
  • Check main SRS fuses and related power/ground circuits for proper voltage and continuity
  • Check for recent crash history or repair work that might have disturbed SRS wiring or connectors
  • If available, check module self-tests and communication with other modules on the vehicle data bus

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage at SRS power feed: approx. 11–14.5 V with ignition ON
  • Squib continuity (right-side airbag): typically low resistance; common nominal range ~0.5–3.5 ohms (manufacturer-specific) — look for open (OL) or very high resistance and also for near-zero short (
  • Resistance between squib lead and chassis ground: should be open or the same as expected squib resistance; measurement depends on circuit topology
  • Data bus: SRS module should show normal CAN/LIN communication activity when scanned
  • No deployment firing voltage present in normal quiescent state (no high-voltage pulse)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety first: follow manufacturer SRS procedures. Disable SRS power by disconnecting the battery and wait the manufacturer-specified time for capacitors to discharge before touching airbag components.
  2. Retrieve and record all SRS codes and freeze-frame data with a capable scan tool. Note any other related codes or communication errors.
  3. Inspect right-side airbag connector(s), seat/door trim and harness for physical damage, corrosion or water entry. Unplug and re-pin connectors if corrosion is found (replace connectors if necessary).
  4. Check SRS fuses and measure supply voltage & ground at the SRS control module and at the right-side airbag connector with ignition ON (do not short any pins).
  5. Measure squib/inflator resistance at the right-side airbag connector (with battery disconnected). Compare to typical range; an open or excessively high resistance indicates wiring break or failed squib; a near-zero short indicates short circuit.
  6. Perform wiggle tests on wiring harnesses while monitoring live SRS data or probe for intermittent faults with a scan tool capturing real-time status. Repair any broken wires or damaged insulation found.
  7. If wiring and connectors are good and squib resistance is within spec, verify SRS module operation and communications. Check for module diagnostic trouble — if the module has failed its internal diagnostics for the right channel, replacement or reprogramming per manufacturer instructions may be required.
  8. After repairs, clear codes, perform system tests and verify SRS lamp extinguishes and no new B0028 reappears. If intermittent, perform extended road test or extended monitoring with scanning tool.
  9. Notes: Do not attempt to fire or bridge squib circuits. Replace squibs, connectors or modules only with OEM-specified parts and follow required calibration/initialization procedures.

Likely causes

  • Open or high-resistance squib circuit to right-side airbag
  • Short to ground or short to battery on the right-side airbag lead
  • Corroded connector at seat/door module or body harness causing intermittent contact
  • Failed SRS module self-test for right-side deployment channel

Fault status

⚠️ Status
SRS: Right-side airbag deployment control circuit fault — module detected abnormal or implausible signal on right-side deployment channel. Airbag may be disabled.
